From the Atlanta Times
Any similarity between Lyndon Johnson the senator and
Lyndon Johnson the President is purely coincidental except
in the exercise of political craftiness.
That’s what so many people in the South tend to overlook
as they consider the thought of “keeping a Southerner in the
White House.”
First of all, how well does he qualify as a Southerner? Ex
cept 1 01 (hat useful drawl, and the fact he likes frequent visits
to his Texas ranch, he has pretty well severed his Southerr
roots.
Apparently he did his homework well during the time he
was serving as understudy to the late President Kennedy
While probing into the Kennedy background, he would have
learned, lor example, that as Mr. Kennedy inched toward the
W hue House his whole philosophy underwent a transforma
non .More and more he turned his back on the principles for
which he had stood in the Senate.
President Johnson has followed much the same pattern.
When former Vice President Richard Nixon was in At
anta a tew weeks back, he said that the best way to draw a
eac , on M r * Johnson was to play back some of his old
speeches.
