As the program began, Debbie

That's What 1 Like About The South
About 300 to 350 miles is about ns far as my wife and
1 drive in one day. When we go to Florida, we usually
stop at the Now Perry Hotel-Motel, Perry, Georgia. This
has been our habit for many, many years. Sometime ago,
they erected several spacious motel rooms to the roar of the
i hotel. Between the mote! and the hotel is a lovely gar
den, and one feels that ho is really in Georgia when he
reaches Perry, It is in the South-the good old South,
1 where the sweet magnolias grow.
They do not serve 'possum in the dining room of the
New Perry Hotel, but they serve some good, plain, well
j cooked food. (Oil, the sins that are committed in the name
of Southern Fried Chicken). Anything one orders here will
, be well prepared. Southern beaten biscuits are served at
the evening meal. The walls of the dining room are
decorated with a wallpaper with the design of a southern
plantation and home. Fresh flowers never fail to adorn
each table. From tables located near large windows one
may overlook the garden revealing a scene which will
gladden one’s heart—especially in the spring.
In the garden is an iron casting bearing these words:
i
“The kiss of the sun for pardon.
The song of the birds for mirth,
■ One is nearer God’s heart in a garden,
s Than anywhere else on earth.”
* 1 have been stopping there so long, 1 am afraid that
ii it will be changed the next time I slop. But a month ago
everything was as usual—the people in the dining room and
the people at the desk were most cordial, and the atmos
phere of friendliness still abounded.
In the twenty years I have been stopping there, 1 have
never met the owners. It in my understanding that their
name is Yates and that their family operates four or five
motels or hotels, and that one family member lives on’each
of the premises. A brother, I believe, runs the large Perry
Motel, a “Quality” court. We visited their gardens and
spacious grounds, and they are lovely too.
* The new Perry Hotel-Motel is the older one, and the
i Perry Motel, only a few blocks away, is the larger, more
palatial. Perry has become a motel center. There are
L . probably ten or more modern motels in Perry, and the
traveler is practically assured of accommodations.
* When I hear of something good, I like to pass the in
formation on to my friends. Perry, Georgia, is Dixie. I
like Dixie. Everybody ought to like the South, just like
( Phil Harris says he likes the South.
For a good stopping place try Perry, and for a good
place to save, try the Home Federal in Knoxville. I just
. have to tell you about the good things.

From Mrs. Edmond R.

find myself remembering so
many things about my child
hood I sometimes get home
sick. As a very small child, I
remember walking as far as
two miles to a one-room
schoolhouse, which had one
teacher. The roads were cov
ered with curly ice, known as
"rabbit ice.”
Oh, the good aroma that
came when I opened my "din
ner bucket. ” Fried potatoes
and biscuits, peanut butter
and crackers.
I remember making sor
ghum molasses. How cold the
mornings were, stripping the
cane as the old mule went
round and round pulling the
mill that squeezed out the
juice from the cane. But the
afternoons were warm and
dry, with grasshoppers jump
ing over our bare feet and
sapping foam at the pan
where the syrup was being
cooked.
I remember making hom
iny from Hickory King corn,
using lye made from wood
ashes. And churning butter,
drying apples and picking
seed from cotton at night.
Sitting around a wood stove
parching corn.
Courting was done walk

was an event to remember.
Another exciting event was
when some man came to the
