He identifies himself as William Martelson, says he' travels around the country as a salesman for a manu facturing company, and puts his beef like this: "I'm a member of the four eyed club. Been wearing glasses since I was a kid, and IVe consulted a lot of specialists in my time. I’ve heard 1 don't know how many warnings about the chance you take when you doctor your own eves. v ( "That's why I'm appalled at the number of department stores that sell glasses like hardware or saucepans. The typical place I mean has a i counter with a sign reading 'glazed goods.' On the counter i —piles of spectacles. Bargains ! in all sizes, shapes and magnifying power. "The worst part is that when 1 pass a counter like this, I | generally see at least one cus \ tomer sifting the pile, trving , to find a pair that suits him. The sight sets my teeth on j edge. Enough here for a caution j ary column?" i There is, no doubt about i (/HMIIkToV IUCKq >8 BY HELEN HALE If you have difficulty getting your family to eat liver as normally prepared, try giving it a crispy jacket. Beat eggs with lemon juice for flavor, then dip in it some liver slices. Coat with bread crumbs. Re peat and chill. Saute in butter, slowly, 8 to 10 minutes, turning as needed. Here’s a different way to prepare pork chops. Brown chops on both sides and bake with a jar of strained plums and tapioca (baby food)which has been mixed with grated lemon peel, cinnamon and ground cloves. If ground meat seems too solid when you’re mixing or browning it, use a potato masher for breaking it up into smaller pieces. Grate cheese, chocolate, lemon or orange peel, or raw vegetables over a sheet of waxed paper. It’s quicker and saves washing dishes. Always keep gelatin dishes in the refrigerator until ready to serve. Chili Conqueso Dip 1/4 cup green pepper, diced 1 small clove garlic, crushed 1 small onion, chopped 1 tbsp butter 2 medium size tomatoes, diced 1 small can chopped green chili or hot peppers 1 lb. processed American cheese Saute in butter the green pepper, garlic and onion. Add diced ripe tomatoes and chili (or hot peppers) and mix thoroughly. While this mixture is cooking slowly, grate the cheese and melt in top of double boiler. When melted add the other ingredi ents to the cheese and blend well. Serve at once hot in a chafing dish or pre-heated bowl with crisp potato chips for dipping. MAKE YOUR OWN | m TV TIST 1. Many a specialist has protested against the bargain basement selling of glazed goods’ for the eyes. Yet the practice appears destined to continue until all of our states ban it. The reason for professional opposition is the same as for any other do-it-yourself medi cal treatment. The layman is no more qualified to prescribe his own glasses than his is to prescribe his own diet. It takes training and skill to diagnose the condition and decide on the remedy. The eyes are a special problem because an individual can "test" a pair of spectacles for himself. He can put them on, and see if they improve his vision. If objects across the room come into sharper focus, well, isn’t that proof enough? Os course it isn’t. The basic trouble may remain, and even grow worse, when the eyesight seems improved. Cataracts or glaucoma may be developing. If so. the fact should be known as quickly as possible. And the only person you can rely on is your eye doctor. That’s why bargain base ment spectacles are no bargain at any price. The money you pay hardly matters. What counts is the threat to your eyesight. —“■■Mil '«g|| HE **v || JjEHB B| * *&yC-, | *v -^uej^^rntt- Defends Club Championship I Mell Tolleton with Favorite Putter I Houston Lake CC Sols Tournament The Men’s Golf Association at Houston Lake Golf and Country Club has announced the second annual HLCC Club Championship Tournament to be held this week end.
