County and City Meeting Reports Delayed a Week Reports of the meetings of the Houston County Commissioners and the Perry City Council held Tuesday will not be available until next week’s Home Journal. The Home Journal is being printed on Tuesday (dated Thurs day, July 4) so our staff can celebrate Independence Day. \ : ' ' IH| ..S - : mm I ill WMmBBHk »I I m Win Perry CC Tourney Bobby Jones, left, and Norman Parker 111 T *• ’• y .i w j HQHvf ■ : ~ w BB If First Plight Winners Edgar Barfield, left, and Mark Volk, Perry Joint Primary To be Held In Houston Many Houston Countians will take part in a bonafide two-par ty, joint primary election for the first tin..- when the Demo crats and Republicans get to gether for the Sept. 11 primary. The mechanics of the joint primary, as best The Home Journal can determine, will be like this; When the voter appears, his name will be checked against the qualified list. If he is in good standing, he will be asked whether he wants to vote the Democratic ticket or the Repub lican ticket. He will be handed the ticket he requested and will go to the voting machine. He will indicate in which party pri mary he wants to vote. The op posing party ticket on the voting machine will be locked out by the poll manager, and the voter then will cast his ballot. In the case of absentee votes, each party will submit its ticket. One party will be printed on one side and the other party on the other ticket of the absentee ballot. The absentee voter will be instructed to vote only one side, that if he votes on both sides of the ticket, the ballot will be thrown out as improperly marked. This will be the first primary held by the Republicans in re cent history. Two years ago, when the Republicans offered several candidates, topped by Howard (Bo) Callaway, they got their right to get on the Novem ber general election ballot by obtaining enough signatures on their petitions to qualify them. It is understood that the costs of the joint primary will be split 50-50 between the two parties. The Republicans also will have a statewide primary, with two candidates for the U.S. Sen ate seat held by Herman Tal madge. STORES, OFFICES TO BE CLOSED ON THE FOURTH Most Perry stores will be clos ed Thursday, July 4, and all gov ernment agencies will be closed for the celebration of Indepen dence Day. No mail will be delivered that day but box holders at the post office will receive their mail. City Hall and -Hie Courthouse will be closed.
