Not Happy Unless Miserable

EDITORIAL
Some people are not happy unless
they are miserable.
We refer to those who are mad be
cause Earl Warren is resigning as
chief justice of the U. S. Supreme
Court. We thought they would be over
joyed, that they could save the money
they spent on their billboards, that
they could now sing and whistle as
they walked down the streets of a
Warren-less America.
Not so. They are mad as hops be
cause he quit at the wrong time. It
gives President Johnson a chance to
appoint a successor, who they are sure
will be just as repulsive to them as

Last week’s letter from a new
comer expressed my ideas on
the subject of "what kind of
treatment Perry gives newcom
ers” very well. We tried very
hard to have the right attitude a
bout our new home before we
moved here—we made up our
minds ahead of time to like it.
But the people of Perry have
made it easy to like it here.
Just a few individuals who are
nice to you can make you like
a town, but Perry has many nice
individuals.

AUTO TAG; A yellow tag with the county num
ber 40 caused some raised eyebrows here this
week. The tag was a Georgia license plate for
1961 and had yellow background and black numer
als. Turned out the owner had put it in storage
for some time (1961 to 1968) and brought it out
of moth balls to get it inspected under the state
auto inspection law that had been passed while
the car was in hibernation. The car runs, not so
smoothly but it runs.
DON’T LET GEORGE DO IT! This is a letter
to Lt. Gov. George T. Smith: Dear Sir: We under
stand that Gov. Maddox is thinking about getting
you to appoint him U. S. Senator if a vacancy oc
curs. He would do this by resigning as governor
and getting you, after you move up to the govern
orship, to appoint him to the U. S. Senate. Please,
George, don’t do it. Your friend, Along About
Now.
YOU CAN’T WIN: Officeholders know that
most of the time “you just can’t win” in dealing
with the taxpayers. Last week, the county commis
sioners received a complaint that a dirt road near
Perry is “too smooth”. Usually the complaint is
that the road is too rough. The taxpayers said the
road is worked so nicely that it is too smooth and
some people use it as a racetrack. Commissioners
said they would see to it that the road is not smooth
anymore; they will work it only after heavy rains.
City officials will tell you that it is very difficult
to get the right amount of light on a street. Some
people demand more street lights. The city installs
the lights, then city hall starts getting calls that the
lights shine in the eyes of those who are trying to
sleep. If you have just enough money to put a
sidewalk on one side of the street, you’ve got some
real trouble. Some want the sidewalk on their side
of the street and others don’t—they want the side
walk on the other side because they don’t want
any more foot traffic on their side. These encount
ers with the public lead the officeholders to be
lieve that, they are not overpaid for their civic
service.
GOOD EATING: We of the press, at our recent
annual convention at Callaway Gardens, partook
of an “All Georgia Products Dinner” coordinated
by the Georgia Department of* Agriculture. Your
tastebuds will stand on end when you read that the
menu include these Georgia products: peach juice,
roast beef, ham, seafood salad, chicken, sweet po
tato souffle, pole beans, corn on cob, sliced toma
toes and cucumbers, deviled eggs, corn muffins,
biscuits, real butter, peanut pie, peach pie, pecan
pie, apple Pie. pitchers of milk, and one import—
coffee. Some editors had difficulty dising from this
festive board.
CHILDREN seldom misquote you. The real
trouble is they usually repeat word for word what
you shouldn’t have said.

SAVANNAH BEACH, Ga. This
vacation has started out the same way
as all past vacations we spent at the
beach it’s raining! Not only is it
pouring down rain, but a storm is
brewing which will probably last all
week. In short, the weather is miser
able and a guy who lives here told me
this is the worst weather they have
had all summer. It figures that 1
would choose this week for a vaca
tion.
The rain did subside Monday
morning long enough for us to go on
the beach. After about a half an hour
of unloading and setting up beach
chairs, floats for the kids, a cooler
full of soft drinks and other articles,
we settled down for some sun and a
swim in the ocean. By this time the
sun had completely disappeared and
the wind had caused the surf to get
rough.
The two boys were satisfied to just
play in the edge of the surf and it
took all Becky could do to keep all
of our beach chairs from blowing
away under the force of a 30-mlie-an
hour wind. But I had to get out there
and show everyone I was a great swim
mer. My downfall came when these
two girls in bikinis walked by in front
of where I was swimming. Really, all
I did was stand up and take a quick
glance and didn’t see the big wave
that crushed into my back. The wave
pounded me on the bottom and as I

Think with me today of the
word love. This word really gets
tossed about. You may just love
pancakes; your daughter may
love to ski; the girl next door
may be head over heals in love
with your son; you may sing
solemnly in church about “Love
divine, all loves excelling;’’ our
community may express its love
to a fire victim by meeting hos
pital expenses.
The English language seems
poor, indeed when it comes to
talking about preference (love),
affection (love), compassion
(love), enjoyment (love), and re
lationship to Almighty God (love)
The Greek language has words
for three dimensions of love.
The first is eros, or a self-grat
ifying love. This is a physical
expression of love. It is plea
surable, but often self-centered,
and relatively short-lived.
The second is philia, or com
panionate love. This is the love
which exists between good
friends, or between parents and
children. Let us call it affection.
The third word for love is
was struggling to get to the surface a
second wave hit and caused me to
skid, face first, on the sandy bottom.
When I finally surfaced, gasping
for air, I discovered that the sandy
ocean bottom had claimed a section of
skin from my nose. My elbows were
also skinned. And all I did was take
a quick glance at two girls in bikinis
walking down the beach.
By the time I crawled back to the
beach, it was pouring down rain again.
So we packed up and went back to the
cottage. Back at the cottage I stretch
ed out on a chaise lounge on ihe
screened porch for a nap. I had been
stretched out for about three minutes
when I heard a blood-curdling scream
from the backyard. The screams were
coming from the and he
was just standing in one spot in the
yard taxing his lungs. I couldn’t figure
what was wrong with him until I step
ped into the back yard right into a
bed of sharp pointed sand spurs. It
was at this point that I joined him
with a scream of my own.
We finally got all the sandspurs
removed and settled down to enjoy
some more of our vacation. Right now
the rain continues to fall and the
wind is blowing at gale force and the
kids are fighting and Becky is telling
me she needs something from the
store—But we’re on vacation and I’m
enjoying every minute of it.
agape. This is the word which
speaks of God’s love for us and
in us. This love was demonstrat
ed at Bethlehem’s manger and
Calvary’s Cross., This is the
love we need desperately in or
der to make sense out of others.
Without God’s help, our other
loves cannot even remain what
they start out to be, or become
what they promise. As God’s
love pours into us, other loves
in our lives receive a firm foun
dation.
A woman tells how all her life
she had hungered for love. As a
child she would do anything to
win approval from her friends and
family. She wanted her mother to
hug her, her father to bring her
tokens of his love. After her high
school graduation, she married,
but her relationship never got
beyond the physical level, and
she knew she had not found any
satisfying love. They had four
children and she began to live
for her children. The torment
was tearing her up inside and
nothing seemed to help. Then
one day she was invited to a Bi-
ble class in someone’s home and
there she heard that Christ loved
her. Suddenly she sensed this
was the love she was looking tor
all her life—here was someone
who loved her just as she was.
She began to come alive.
But this woman realized a
gulf between her husband and
God. Gradually she realized how
many things needed changing
in her life. There was her loud,
nagging voice—the Spirit God in
her taught her how to hold her
tongue. Her housekeeping 'im
proved. Her meals showed more
interest and originality, -he
worked off excess pounds, in
stead of going back to bed after
her husband left for work, she
stayed up and enjoyed a good
breakfast with her children, had
prayer and Bible reading with
them before the school bus came.
As God’s love kept softening
and changing her, the woman »
love for her husband and children
expressed itself in ways that
softened and affected them. 1
day her husband went out in
door, and then turned around and
came back. He took her in al
arms and kissed her good-bve,
something he had not done
years.
And what a delight as
tucked her five-year-old im
bed, to hear her say, “Mora,
it’s so nice since we came >
love Jesus, isn’t it?”
Only in His name can -“ jr
human loves blossom with b*
ty and security.
