THE OLD TIMER ' J
From Mrs, Ella Hentschel,
Kansas City, Mo.: 1 remember
when Indians walked on the
street in downtown Kansas
City. Deer, ducks, rabbits and
quail hung out in front of
stores.
Street cars called cable
cars in those days were
pulled by horses and carried
small stoves to warm the
passengers. The fare was five
cents.
Sidewalks, if there were any,
were wooden, and streets were
not paved. You held your
breath when the 9th Street
cable car went down the 9th
Street Hill through a tunnel
and on to West Bottoms.
Some of the streets were
paved with round cedar blocks
and after a hard rain these
blocks would swell and pop up.
What a mess to clean up. Kids
would gather these for fire-,
wood, as gas was unheard of
In those days.
Our Madison School had
four rooms, was later enlarged.
Drinking water was in buckets
with long-handled dippers. No
bathrooms. The outside John
was quite popular.

Known as Hamilton on the

development is recreating the
area that was the hub of
activity of the town in the early
1900’s. More than a dozen
buildings are involved in the
project, including an old
general store, an apothecary, an
ice cream parlor, a carriage shop
and a music museum.
While some of the buildings
in Hamilton are merely being
restored to their original design
of some 00 years ago, others are
being moved to the site from
distant locations.
Hamilton on the Square is
being built around the four
sides of the little town’s
business district, which is
already in the shape of a square.
It is being recreated by skilled
craftsmen in accordance with
an architect’s conception of the
original square.
You will find the leisurely

is printed in the style of the era.
Visitors are invited to watch
