Mrs. Brooks Named Perry's "Woman of the Year"

Os Goal Set In Houston
Houston County United
Givers Fund officials report,
that a total of $168,770.52 has
been collected in the 1970
Houston County UGF drive, for
the operation of 17 UGF affili
ated agencies.
According to J. Robert
“Bob” Richards, Chairman of
the 1970 drive, a total of
$128,349.03 was raised in the
Robins AFB Combined Federal
Campaign, and a total of
$39,921.49 was raised in Hous
ton County, representing a
19.8% increase over the amount
raised in 1969, making a com
bined total of $168,770,521.
Andy Borders, Chairman of
the Warner Robins Division,
said that his division raised
$32,335.65 or an increase of
17.8% over the amount raised
to the 1969 campaign. This
amount raised in the 1969 cam
paign. This amount represents
an all time high for the Warner
Robins Division.
Moody H. Mulkey, Jr.,
Chairman of the Perry Division,
stated that his division had
raised a total of $7,585.84, an
increase of some $1,71595 or
29.2% more than was raised in
the 1969 campaign.
In a combined statement,
Richards, Mulkey and Borders
praised their campaign workers
and the citizens of Houston
County for their support during
the 1970 UGF Campaign.
Richards also stated, ‘‘with
out the efforts of Leon Echols,
Robins AFB Combined Federal
Campaign Chairman and his
staff, and the employees of
Robins Air Force Base, this
amount would not have been

Week in Journal
We goofed last week in our
front page story of the City
Council meeting. We errone
ously published the wrong sal
aries now received by the Perry
Mayor and Council. The Mayor
now makes $l5O a month salary
plus SIOO a month allowance
for expense and travel. The
Councilman now receive only
SSO a month.
A bill will be introduced in
the General Assembly by Rep.
Sam Nunn Jr., that will give the
Council the power to set their
salaries at a recommended
$6,000 a year for the mayor and
$2,400 a year for the Council
men.
We think they deserve it.
The mayor and council put in
considerable amount of work
into their jobs besides the
hours they spend meeting.

Begin Construction In Perry

missioners, in a meeting Tues
day, set the liquor license fee
here at the rate of $3,500 a
year, which is the same '?• set
by the city of Warner Robins
last week. The City Council
of Perry, at their next meeting,
is expected to set this City's
liquor license fee at about the
same rate.
The County will tax liquor
at the rate of SO cents a gallon.
Persons applying for a
county liquor license must be
residents of Houston County
for one year and only one li
cense will be issued to a mem
ber of one family. The Com
missioners set the hours of
operation for liquor stores
from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.
In other action, the Com
missioners voted to set up a
county wide fire protection pro
gram, name a fire commission
and ask for the help of the
cities of Perry and Warner
Robins in answering fire calls
from rural areas in the county.
The Commissioners intend
to start the fire protection pro
gram with just the essential
amount of equipment and expand
the department as soon as
possible.
The Commissioners were

Dies of Gunshot
Ten-year-old Curtis Ray
Bush was fatally wounded
Sunday in what Houston
County Sheriff Albert Hud
son termed an apparently
“accidental” shooting by a
14-year-old youth.
The dead youth was the
son of Mr. and Mrs. Willie L.
Bush of Kathleen. They had
lived in Kathleen for the past
four years. Bush is retired
from the Air Force.
The accident occurred
about 6:45 p. m. at the Col-

That is a sample of some of the
answers we got to our questions. We
saved one answer to last because we
think it tells, in the simplest terms of
a child, what Christmas is all about.
This answer came to our question

Eugene Brown, Centerville
businessman, and six represen
tatives of other rural communi
ties in the County, appeared
before the Commissioners to ask
their help in the fire protection
problem.
It was pointed out at the
meeting that the County already
has an agreement with the city
of Perry for answering rural
fire calls.
County Commission Chair
man H.C. Talton Jr., said the
Commissioners will name a
county fire commission to make
application for fire equipment,
decide where the equipment is
to be located and appoint peo
ple to be responsible for the
equipment.
Dave Crockett, one of the
county's tax assessers, propo
sed that the Commissioners let
the tax assessers hire Hugh
Lawson of Perry as the apprai
ser for the county at a salary
of SIO,OOO a year. The Com
missioners instructed Crockett
and employees of the tax
assesser's board to meet with
the job classifier of the county
Saturday to work out a salary
schedule to be approved by the
Commissioners at a later
meeting.
