Laurie Lohmeyer poses between her rescuers, Justin and Stephen Mitchell, on the curbing where she sat when they walked by and spied a copperhead moc casin less than two feet behind her. The boys led her and the dog to safoty and killed the snake with a shovel. The snake was buried to keep children and dogs from handling it. Quick Thinking Perry Boys Might Have Saved A Life BY MAXINE THOMPSON Four year old Laurie Loh meyer was silting on the brick curbing around the en trance to the crawl space under her house when Justin and Stephen Mitchell, her seven and nine year old neighbors' in Hermitage sub division just outside Perry on Highway 341 south, walked through the yard and looked behind her. One of them quickly led the little girl away while the other carried her small black dog to safely. Then one of them called to Mrs. William Lohmeyer through her kit chen door and told her there was a copperhead moccasin in the enclosure where Lau rie had been playing. Later Mrs. Lohmeyer des cribed her own actions as “very excitable" as she grab bed a gun and ran outside with the idea of shooting the reptile, one of the most poi sonous in the United States. “But it looked so narrow I just knew I’d never be able to shoot straight enough to kill it.” she said. That was when the boys went into action. They sug gested that shooting would not be the best way to kill it, that chopping it up with a shovel would be better. When she agreed, Stephen and Justin moved a ladder that was in the way, then one of them picked up a shovel and dispatched the snake without turning a hair. “Their absolute calmness about the whole thing was so amazing,” said Mrs. Lob meyer, who also said that she felt the boys quite pos sibly saved Laurie’s life. Fortunately her sixteen month old daughter Janet was playing in the house in stead of in the yard with Laurie as she often did. William Lohmeyer, a Shift Superintendent in the hot tling department of Pabst Brewery which is nearing completion near Perry, mov ed his family here around the last of April from their native Matawan, New Jersey. R. “Ron” Mitchell is Supervisor of Technical Ser cives for Continental Can Co,, which will be operated in connection with Pabst. Al though they are natives of Houston, Texas, the Mitch ells moved to Perry from Or lando, Florida in February. Besides Justin and Stephen, they have four other chil dren, Christopher, age 10; Miriam, 9; Vivian, 5; and Jim, 3. The Mitchell boys, who are also enjoying country life, have been accustomed to roaming the area catch ing harmless snakes. Al though they realized that the copperhead moccasin is poisonous, they did not real ize that when country land is cleared for subdivision building the copperheads and rattlesnakes, and in creek areas the cottonmouth or water moccasin, frequent ly invade the yards of their former haunts. The boys will be looking very carefully at any snake they consider catching in the future. This Year-When Every Penny, Every Peanut Counts-Get It All With the 1970 LILLISTONISOO PEANUUHMBINE ..
