Westfield Gets New Exercise Machine

Atlanta Braves Plan 20 Special
Promotion Games For 72 Season
The Atlanta Braves have
scheduled 20 special
promotions to enhance en
joyment of the 1972 Braves
home games.
The list of promotions
scheduled by the Braves for
the coming year includes
new features like The
( oontry-Western Celebrity
Game, The George Plimpton
All-Star Game and WSB
Radio Family Night Cash
Give-aways, as well as
standard Braves’
promotions, such as The
Charlie Brown All-Star
Game, Circus Day, Sterling
Fireworks Night, Fan Ap
preciation Day, WSB -TV
Ladies Nights, The Old-
Timers Game and the Super
Sports Clinic.
Three big give-away days
have been scheduled at
which youngsters will
receive parts of the new
Braves’ uniforms. They are
Cap Day, Helmet Day and T-
Shirt Day.

Braves in their colorful new
uniforms. Camera Day is
sponsored by Eastman-
Kodak Company.
CAP DAY - Braves vs
Cards, July 23 at 2:15. The
first 15,000 youngsters (12
and under) attending the
game with a reserved seat
ticket will receive one of the
Braves’ colorful new
baseball caps free.

STAR GAME - Braves vs.
Dodgers, July 30

COUNTRY-WESTERN
CELEBRITY GAME -
Braves vs. Reds, April 23 at
2:15. Top names in country
western music will play a
celebrity game on the field
prior to the regular Braves
game. Then, following the
game the stars will put on a
giant country-western music
show on the field.
FAMILY NIGHTS - April
20, July 6 and August 3 (three
scheduled during the
season). Family Nights will
be sponsored for the first
time this season by WSB
Radio of Atlanta, and each
Family Night will feature
WSB’s Cash Give-away to
fans in the stands. WSB will
exchange cash for correct
answers and hundreds of
dollars in cash will be given
away. Reduced prices for
ladies, teen-agers and senior
citizens are in effect in
reserved seats (except club
and dugout levels).
FAN APPRECIATION
DAY - Braves vs. Giants,
September 17 at 2:15. The
Braves say “thank you” to
all their fans by giving away
thousands of dollars worth of
prizes to lucky fans at
tending this popular event.
FIREWORKS NIGHT -
Braves vs. Cubs, July 4 at
7:05. The nation’s largest
aerial fireworks display
takes place at the Stadium
immediately after the game.
Rockets explode as high as
1200 feet in the sky in an hour
display of pageantry
sponsored by Sterling Beer.

Charlie Brown All-Star
Game for adults ... WSB
Radio will run a contest to
pick the George Plimpton All
Stars from men who give the
best reasons why they’d like
to play at Atlanta Stadium.
Plimpton, who became
famous as the “Paper”
quarterback of the Detroit
Lions, will be on hand for the
game.
HEI.MET DAY - Braves
vs. Cubs, May 14, at 2:15.
One of the most popular
components of the Braves’
new uniform is the colorful
batting helmet. The first
15,000 youngsters (12 and
under) attending Helmet
Day with a reserved seat
ticket will receive a free
helmet.
LADIES NIGHTS - First
Monday home game of each
month (five scheduled
during the season). WSB
Television sponsors Indies
Nights with the Braves, and
not only do ladies receive
reduced ticket prices in
reserved seats (except club
and dug out levels), but they
receive a free gift from
Colgate-Palmolive and
special entertainment is
provided on the field prior to
the games. Examples of this
season’s Indies Night en
tertainment are Pick-A-
Puppy-Night, when Jim
Dandy Company will give
away puppies to lucky
ladies; the Men’s Lib Game,
with the nation’s top ladies
softball team playing a
celebrity team of men; and
the always popular Father-
Son Game.
OLD-TIMERS GAME -
Braves vs. Reds, August 12
at 7:05. Great stars of the
past come back out of
retirement for the Old-
Timers Game each year.
This year’s contest will
feature many of the greatest
players in the history of the
game and should be the best
yet for Atlanta.
WESTFIELD BASEBALL OPENER
Hornet Nine Stays With Eagles
For 5 Frames Before Losing 9-1
Westfield Schools opened
its 1972 baseball season last
Monday afternoon at Luther
Williams Field in Macon
against powerful Stratford
Academy. Hornet senior
righthander Lynn Bacon
kept the Eagles in check for
five innings allowing only
three runs until Stratford
scored 6 runs in its last two
at bats to win 9-1.
Coach Bubba Adam’s
Eagles took second place in
the 1971 state playoffs and
■ had a 17-0 regular season
record. Basketball star'.
Joey Claxton paced the
Eagles attack with a back
breaking 2 run triple.
Stratford sophomore Em
mitt Griggs allowed West
field only 3 hits and struck
out 7. The Eagles amassed
only 7 hits themselves
against Lynn Bacon, the
IN SEASON OPENER
Westfield Netters Upset
Powerful Monroe Academy
Westfield’s tennis team
opened its 1972 net season on
a winning note last March
15th by slipping by Monroe
Academy of Forsyth 4-3.
Felix Smith and David
Hurley paced the triumphant
Hornets by providing 3 of the
4 points won by Westfield.

over last year’s squad, which
finished 1-7. Bobby Harrison,
aggregation prior to the
matches played at
Ochlahatchee, but saw their
victory plans upset by
Westfield. Coach Shirley
McCowen’s charges proved
equal to their task and won 4
of the 7 matches played.
In boys action, Westfield’s
Felix Smith won his number
2 singles contest then teamed
with David Hurley to capture
the boys double match.
Hurley also won the number
3 singles, stopping former
Perryan Carter Bates 9-7.
This was a tense exciting
contest that was decided
when Hurley finally broke
Bates’ service and went
ahead.
In other boys action,
Robert Richardson snared
the boys number 4 singles for
Westfield, whipping his
Mustang opponent 8-2. Mark
Etheridge, Westfield’s
number one singles player,
lost his match to Monroe 8-1.
In girls play, Monroe
captured both matches. The
Mustangs beat Westfield’s
Debbie and Becky Hooten 8-2
to take the girls doubles. In
the girls singles contest,
Sandy Hudson lost a heart
breaking 9-7 decision which
could have easily gone the
other way.
The next opponent for
Westfield’s netters is
Brentwood in a contest
scheduled for Monday
March 27th at Brentwood.
Lynn Bacon, Bo Etheridge,
and Danny Overton head the
Hornets as they will provide
steady senior leadership.
Work is continuing on the
Hornets baseball field which
is located just beside and in
front of the school complex.
