Proper Arab-a Planting
In the next few weeks,
hundreds of azaleas will be
planted by Georgia
homeowners Many of these
plants will give disap
pointing results due to im
proper planting One very
common error in planting
azaleas is locating them in
poorly drained areas in the
yard. Azaleas are not at all
tolerant to poor drainage and
will grow poorly or even
tually die if the soil does not
drain well Another planting
practice that often results
in poor azalea growth is
failure to add adequate
organic matter into the soil
prior to planting Azalea
growth will be much more
vigorous if organic materials
such as peat moss, pine

bark, and leaf mmd are
thoroughly mixed into the
soil. Half soil and half
organic matter extending
out at least a foot from the
trunk of the plant is
suggested. Planting too
deeply is another common
error that is made in plan
ting azaleas This can
severely stunt future growth
The shrub should be planted
no deeper than it originally
grew in the nursery
Think About Lawn
Weed Control Now
Many homeowners wait
100 late in the spring to ef
fectively control broadkaf
weeds in their lawns To
control weeds such as
dandelions, cudweed, wild
geranium, henbit, and dock,
a spray program should be
begun in March The her
bicide 2.4-D is effective in
controlling most broadkaf
weeds in the lawn The
amine form of 2,4-D is
preferred since it reduces
the possibility of injury to
surrounding shrubs If
homeowners plan to prevent
germination (A crab grass in
their lawns, the
preemergence application
should be made soon ac
cording to Dr James Miller.

Hurry Shrub Planting
March will bring about the
ending of the planting season
for some of our shrubs and
trees Deciduous shrubs and
trees should be planted
before they go into active
growth The exact time of
beginning growth will vary
from South Georgia to North
Georgia,
To insure success with
transplants, thorough soil
preparation is essential
lieeply prepared soils that
have had sane form of
organic matter added such
as peat moss, compost, leaf
mold, finely ground pine
bark will produce better
growth and development of
plants Remember that when
we plant a tree or a shrub w e
will be expecting it to grow
into maturity and remain
beautiful for many, many
years Therefore, the need
for thorough soil preparation
becomes dear
Clear Up Perennial
Plantings
Perennial plants such as
chrysanthemums, daisies,
phlox and others will be
going into the growth in just
a short time Prior to
beginning of this grow th w ise
gardeners will make sure
that the plants and planting
area have been cleaned of all
oW plant refuse and other
debris Not only will you
make the area more at
tractive but it will also
reduce the chance of
problems with diseases and
insects. Many times these
pests live over-winter on
dead leaves and stems
As your perennial plants
go into the growth, par
ticularly chrysanthemums.
U will be a good time to root
cuttings in order to increase
the amount of your plan

Their busy schedule in
Washington includes six
assemblies, committee
meetings, planned meals and
several tours.
They will hear a history of

Friday. Apr 14. at 2:23 p.m.
In the case of shrubs it
becomes roost necessary for
those such as boxwood,
azaleas, and others that have
a very shallow root sy stem to
be planted at the correct
depth Generally the correct
depth will be at the same
level or slightly above that at
w hich the plant was growing
in the nursery or in the
container Depth of planting
is related to drainage and to
aeration of the soil To insure
proper drainage and
aeration we first of all should
dig large deep holes and
amend the sod It can be
amended by the addition of
some form of organic matter
and in the case of heavy
clay s some sand A general
formula would be to mix
equal parts of organic
matter, sandy loam and the
soil from the hole. A
minimum sue. even for the
smallest plane would be 24“
wide and If deep To gel the
plant at the correct depth it
will be necessary to place
some of she amended sod in
the hole and firm to prevent
settling

f reezer Practices Id The
Use of Home Freezers
Since World War D. Home
freezers have become in
creasingly prevalent and
freezing increasingly im
portant as a method of food
preservation. In 1970. almost
35 percent of all
housekeeping households in
the united States and
freezers These points will
help you get more quality
from frozen foods.
First use only quality
foods. prepare and package
foods correctly and freezer it
as quickly as possible.
Assuming you have ac
complished a good job on
these, there are three areas
in which you can improve the
quality of frozen food. Keep a
thermometer in the food
freezer. The temperature
should never nse above 0
degrees F. It is best to set the
dial so as to have 0 degrees
F. reading
Second, keep a freezer
inventory record This is
necessary so you will know
what's in the freezer and how
long it has been in the
freezer Each food has a
recommenced frozen food
storage period - based on 0
degee F,
Third, develop a plan to
use the food within definite
tune periods This means
some type of freezing plan so
you'll freeze only the foods
y our family can and will use
One erf the joys erf having a
freezer is having foods ready
to use anytime
Now. from the standpoint
erf dollars and cents, plan to
use the freezer more fully to
reduce the ceist per pound of
frozen food. If yeiu have a
freezer that holds 500 pounds
erf food, attempt to fill it at
least 2 4 tunes during the
y ear Now is a good time to
start good freezer practices.
Perhaps your freezer needs

Food Preservation
Tips For March
0 Degrees is the word:
National attention is being
focused on keeping com
mercially frozen foods at 0
degrees F. or lower at all
times. Taking off from the
fact that the optimum ter
perature at which all frozen
foods should be held while
they are enroute from
processor to retailer to the
tables of America is 0
degrees F. The .Amencan
Frozen Food Institute is
conducting a program.
Watch the Mark of Zero".
An excellent motto for
every one: “For peak quality
in frozen foods, watch the
mark of zero. Keep your
freezer at zero degrees F. or
below”.
The Package Isn’t Free
When you buy ready-to
serve foods, you pay for the
package. Out of the $101.6
billion that consumers paid
in one year for farm foods.
SB.B billion went into the
packaging materials. One
way to save your 9c out of
each retail food dollar is to
do more of the pre
preparation in your kitchen
In this way you can reuse
freezer containers and glass
canning jars.
Keeping Food Safe To Eat
Poor food handling
practices often cause illness
even though the foods were
safe to eat when purchased
or first prepared. Strict
cleanliness of person and
surroundings is one of the
best way’s to prevent the
contamination of foods and
the spread of food borne
illness in the home Lack of
sanitation, insufficient
cooking and improper
storage can allow bacteria in
food to increase to dangerous
levels.
What many people don’t
realize is that when food is
frozen, bacteria, are not
killed, but are simply
prevented from multiplying
Once the food is thawed, the
bacteria begin to multiply
again

“Every year our customers
use more electricity. And
we must build to supply it.”
W. E. Ehrenspcrger
Vice Presidem. Comtruciion Engineering
Georgia Power Compam
"All over our service area, people are using more
and more electric power. The increase in population
and improved standards of living make our con
struction program necessary . Georgia Power's present
system took more than 40 years to develop. But
growth studies show it must be doubled by 1978.
"We’re busy keeping up with your present needs
and building for your future. This year we'll spend
5457 1 ; million for construction. Thai's far more
than the income from customer bills, so most of the
money must be borrowed—even though interest rates
are steep. Then. too. environmental protection ac
counts for many millions of dollars of our costs.
"All these things affect the price of your elec
tricity. So does inflation. Every item we buv. every
wage we pay has gone up. In today's economv, it
isn't possible to continue providing electric power
at pre-inflation prices.
"We know our construction program is vital to
supplying your increasing needs. We hope you
understand, loo."

Meat for the Freezer
Remember that prime and
choice grade meat is usually
more tender, juicy and
flavorful than that in lower
grades. When buying in
quantity for the freezer, buy
only meat of the higher
quality grades.
