GARMENTCARE
LABELING
I just washed a brand new
dress, and it lost all its shape
and the color faded. When I
took it back to the store, they
said 1 should have had it
dry-cleaned, and wouldn’t
take it back. What can I do to
be sure this doesn't happen
again?
This is one of the most
common consumer problems,
and one of the hardest to lick.
After July 3rd, 1972, you
won’t have to worry about it,
however. The Federal Trade
Commission has ruled that all
garments leaving the factory
after this date must have
permanent care labels sewn
into them. These labels must
clearly show all the steps
necessary to keep the
garments in good shape. Among
the things they will tell you
’ are whether to dry-clean,
machine wash or hand wash,
what temperature and cycle
the washing machine should
be set at, whether the garment
needs pressing, and if so
whether to use a hot or cool,
steam or dry iron, whether it
is safe to clean the garment in
a coin-op machine, whether to
wring or drip dry, whether to
bleach, whether the garment
will bleed or fade onto other
clothes, and much more.
Further, this regulation
states that materia) you buy to
make clothes must have
permanent care tags that you
can easily sew or iron onto the
finished garment. Hosiery is
also included in this
regulation, but gloves, hats
and shoes are not.
Until July, there are two
things you can do to try to
avoid this problem. The first is
to set up a system for keeping
the hang tags that come on
many garments. These tags are
supposed to tell you how to
wash or clean the garment in
question. Unfortunately, they
are easily lost, and, even if you
kept them, you may not be
sure which tag goes to which
garment. One good way to
solve this problem is to get a
set of 3-by-5 index cards, and
staple or tape the hang tags to
them. Then, write on the card
the color and a brief
description of the garment the
tag goes to, and keep them all
in the same card box,
envelope, or in your sewing
basket. Even if you don’t use

the card system, write the
description on the hang tag
and keep them all together.
Then, when you get ready to
wash or clean a garment, the
tags are right there to check
with.
Now, you say, what about
the clothes that didn’t have
hang tags when I bought them,
or those that have been lost?
That’s a bit more complicated.
What you should do is cut a
small piece from the inside of
a seam or from the belt if you
don’t use it, or from the hem
you cut off if you had to
shorten the garment. Outline
the piece on a slip of paper so
that you can check for
shrinking, and wash it as you
intend to wash the garment. If
it doesn’t fade, shrink or
crumple, the garment will
probably come out alright.
If you want to have the
garment dry-cleaned, snip off
a piece as described before,
and ask the dry-cleaner to test
it before cleaning the garment.
Many cleaners make such tests
without being asked to be sure
that material can withstand
cleaning chemicals and
temperatures.
One more thing, if any of
the terms used on the new
permanent care labels confuse
you, you can get a complete
list of their meanings from the

Manufacturers Association,
1611 North Kent Street,

SPRING SALES
April is a good month for
buying next year’s winter coat
as well as many skirts and
sweaters that are now reduced.
It’s also a good time for winter
boots. You may also get a
good buy on warm weather
clothes at the after Easter
sales. Many stores overstock
for Easter buying, and have to
reduce the clothes they have
left after the holiday in order
to make room for new
merchandise.
Because of spring cleaning,
many stores offer specials on
household utensils such as
mops, waxing brushes, etc.,
during May. It’s also a good
month for finding rugs and
carpets reduced, and many
stores will be having their
semi-annual white sales. Also,
stores always rush the season.
They will be stocking winter
clothes before the summer is
over, and often resort clothes
are reduced in May for this
reason.
