Perryans Receive Promotions At USDA Research Station In Byron Dr. H. C. Kirkpatrick has been made the new Director of the USDA Southeastern Fruit and Tree Nut Research Station at Byron, Ga., and Dr. Howard L. Malstrom has been made Investigations Leader, Tree Nut In vestigations, of this branch. As Director, Dr. Kirk- H. C. Kirkpatrick H.L Malstrom Patrick will be responsible for initiating cooperative research with the University of Georgia and other State Agricultural Experiment Stations in the Southeast on problems relating to the major fruit and nut in dustries in the area. At the present time, there are 15 scientists conducting various research programs at Byron, but it is anticipated that the number of scientists will increase to 25 when the station is fully staffed. It is anticipated that support personnel for the station will increase to over 50 people as new programs become established. In addition to his responsibilities as Station Director, Dr. Kirkpatrick will initiate virus research studies of the peach and other stone fruits. There has been very little effort in the past to determine the extent that viruses reduce production and affect tree life of the stone fruits of the Southeast. Prior to coming to Byron in the summer of 1971, Dr. Kirkpatrick had con ducted stone fruit virus research at Wenatchee, Washington, for the last 23 years. A native of Washington state, Dr. Kirkpatrick received his Bachelor of Science degree from Washington State Univer sity; Master of Science Degree from the University of Idaho; and his Ph. D. degree from Cornell University. Dr. Kirkpatrick is a member of the Perry Lions Club. He and Mrs. Kirk patrick live in Perry; they have three children, all grown and away from home. Dr. Malstrom is a native of Illinois. He received his B. S. degree from the University of Illinois in 1956. Following a tour of military duty with the Air Force, he attended the University of California at Davis where he received his M.S. Degree in 1964, and his Ph. D. degree in 1970. His research studies were on nutritional and physiological problems of the grape. As Investigations Leader at the Byron station, Dr. Malstrom will have the national responsibility for conducting production research on edible tree nuts in the United States. Pecan research is currently being conducted at Brownwood, Texas; Shreveport, Louisiana; and Byron, TOPS Club To Install Officers Thursday Night Perry TOPS Club Number 39, which meets in the Security Federal Bldg, every Thursday night from 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., recently installed new officers. With an impressive can dlelight installation service, the leader, Virgie Dent, accepted the Candle of Continuity (a symbol of service and loyalty for the coming year) and lighted the candles of the co-leader, Gail Allen; the secretary, Sandra Albritton; the treasurer, Polly Williamson; and weight recorder, Cathy Stanley. j The outgoing officers Virgie Dent, Polly Williamson, Wanda Williamson, Marcie Nobles and Cathy Stanley were presented with charms. Certificates and charms were presented to Janie Geyston, Lynn Shelton and Norma Haughney for being division winners. Norma Haughney received a pin for having lost the most weight during the past year. Virgie Dent, Cathy Stanley, Wanda William son,and Janie Geyston represented the Perry Club at Columbus, Georgia, April 7th and Bth for State Recognition Days. The Perry Tops Club has twenty-five members. Anyone interested in joining TOPS is invited to attend a meeting. Moody Motor Co. Dr. Malstrom began his employment with the Fruit and Nut Crops Research Branch in June 1970 and has initiated nutritional and cultural studies of the pecan at the new Byron station. His immediate objectives are to find the influence of irrigation and nutrition on pecan production and nut quality. In addition to these studies, Dr. Malstrom is establishing tree spacing experments and test plantings of new selections from Mr. Mad den’s pecan breeding program at Brownwood, Texas. It is expected that these new studies initiated by Byron will be of value to the entire eastern pecan growing region. Pecan growers visiting central Georgia should take the opportunity to call on Dr, Malstrom to discuss his national pecan research program. Dr. and Mrs. Malstrom also live in Perry and have a son, Jon, age G. Dr. Malstrom is a member of the Perry Lions Club.
