June 4th Is Deadline For PH & T Registration A large number of boys residing in the Perry and Houston County area have registered to test their baseball skills in the Official Major League Baseball Pitch, Hit and Throw Competition (PH&T). Registration closes June 4th. The competition, open to all Houston County boys (whether they are on a baseball team or not aged 9 through 12, is a nationwide youth program sponsored by Major lieague Baseball and Phillips Petroleum Com pany. Robert Harding of Perry, the PH&T coordinator for this area, said that registration is running well on schedule. Competition begins with the local contest at Houston Jr. Hi Athletic Field in Perry, during the week of Harris, Green Shine In Area District Track Meet On Sat., May 6th, Ferry’s Jada Harris and I .eon Green were super in their efforts as they represented Houston County in a District track meet made up of three area teams. The meet was held in Warner Kobins International Stadium and consisted of teams from Milledgeville, Ga., Kobins Air Force Base and Houston County |as represented by kids from Centerville, Ferry and Warner Kobins). This was a meet of boys and girls ages 10 through 14. Those tracksters who finished first or second in their events were selected to represent our District in the upcoming State track meet to be held this Saturday in Warner Kobins. Kntries from all over the State will come from other District areas who have public recreation track teams. The Houston County team was the winner, by a large margin, with Milledgeville placing second and Kobins Air Force Base taking third. Ferry will furnish two real fine track stars to the Houston County entry. Their credentials are impressive as they were earned through three regular track meets, a County wide meet and the District meet. Jada and 1 .eon proved they merited their selection to this group of all stars by being both con sistent and high scorers Perry Girls Nab 2nd & 4th Perry girls, age 9 and 10, captured second place with a team score of 31 points. Jada Harris led the way with a terrific 17 points as she won first place in Uie second heat of the 100 yard dash In 14.1, Jada was also second in both the 50 yard dash and the Broad jump. Myrtice Walker strongly aided her teams cause by placing second in the first heat of the 100 yard dash and placing third in the Broad jump Myrtice scored 9 personal points. The 440 yard relay team in this age group was fantabulous in that the team was composed of Pamela Walker and Alnita Lasseter from the eight year olds to run the first and second legs of the relay. Jada ran the third leg and Myrtice was the anchor runner. Even with the two 8 year olds this group took second place adding five more points to their team total. This meet was held on April 24th and was composed of four teams. Tracksters from Perry competed with the Chargers, Roadrunners and Westside Wildcats of Warner Robins. Perry’s age 8 and under girls took a fourth place as they earned 22 points. Pamela Walker won first June 10 through June 15. Local winners will advance to district contests on the weekend of June 17-18 and district winners will move up to division contests on a weekend in late June, or early July, with the specific date to be announced soon. Eight division winners who compile the highest scores in their league and age group four representing the National league and four the American League will compete for four national championships at the All- Star Game in Atlanta on July 25. To register, obtain in formation and receive the free Baseball tips booklet all boys age 9 through 12 should go to the Phillips 66 Service Center at Hwy 341 and 1-75 (across from Davis Bros. Cafeteria) in Perry. Register today! throughout the entire track season. As to their most recent exploits - Jada was second in the 100 yard dash and Leon was second in the 220 yard run These are the events they will be entered in at the State meet. Jada is a ten year old girl and I .eon is a twelve year old boy. For each of their second place finishes they earned 5 points each. Jada also ran a strong fourth in the 50 yard dash ( no points). I eon placed third in the 100 yard dash, adding 4 points to his teams total. Perry was also represented in the District meet by 14 year old Cor nelius Vance who ran with three Warner Robins boys in a 440 yard relay. That team placed third, earning 4 points, therefore Cornelius will not be in the State meet. In the 12 year old, 440 relay, Perry had a fine team consisting of Bernard Lasseter, William Hill, Grady Vance and an chorman lieon Green. This team earned 4 points by finishing third. This group will not be in the State meet. Perry kids supplied 22 of Houston County 's total points. Congratulations to Jada, Leon. Bernard, William, Grady and Cornelius for your efforts in the District meet. place in the Softball throw with a toss of 734 ft. Pamela also placed second in Uie first heat of the 50 yard dash. Alnita fur nished strong support as she was second in the 50 yard dash, second heat. She was second in the High jump. Pamela earned 12 points and Alnita scored 10 points. Camille Sumner per formed very hard in several events for the eleven and twelve age group but was unable to score points She always runs her best and is an eager competitor. liOretta Lasseter earned 4 points in the Broad jump for the 13 and 14 year olds. She participated in several other events always trying her best for Perry. In three meets against nine opponents the age 8 and under girls scored a total of 105 points finishing first, first and fourth in that order. By the same token our 9 and 10 year olds scored a total of 1064 points in the same number of meets and against the same competition. Their finishes were second all three times -a very con sistent group. We salute not only these girls but their very dedicated, friendly and hardworking coaches Mrs. La Verne Harris and Mrs. Mary Walker.
