Members of the United Daughters of the Confederacy decorate graves of all
Confederate soldiers with Confederate flags at Evergreen Cemetery in Perry
each year on Southern Memorial Day. This grave, against a background of
wrought iron and trees draped with Spanish Moss, is representative of more
than 125 Confederate graves decorated.
Confederate Memorial Day Held
Memorial Day was ob
served April 26th at West
field School.
The invocation was given
by Miss Sandy Hudson,
homecoming queen of
Westfield.
Mrs. Tom Cater led the
salute in the United States

Rev. James Teresi
told students, faculty
and guests at a U.D.C.
program at Westfield
School that the
Memorial Day should
be “not for Nor
therners nor for
Southerners, but for
Americans.” He said it
was necessary for
people in all parts of
our country to work
together, to become
united.

Flag and salute to the
Confederate Flag.
The Westfield Trio sang
several selections.
Mr. J. E. Worrell, head
master of Westfield, in
troduced the speaker, Rev.
James M. Teresi. Rev.
Teresi gave a most inspiring
talk in which he emphasized
the fact that we are all
Americans whether we come
from the south, north, east,
or west. Also that we should
each be proud of our
heritage.
Following the talk Mrs. W.
E. Pace presented a check to
Perry's U.D.C. Chapter
Selects New Officers
The Sgt. Clinton C. Duncan
Chapter U.D.C. met May 3rd
at the Eastgate branch of the
Bank of Perry with Mrs.
Clyde (lurr and Mrs. Hollis
Kezar as hostesses.
Mrs. Kezar, president,
presided over the business
meeting.
The nominating com
mittee presented the
following slate of officers for
the year 1972-73. Mrs A. L,
Downs, president; Mrs, Ted
Smith, vice president; Mrs.
Tom Cater, 2nd vice
president; Mrs. Clyde Gurr,
3rd vice president; Mrs.
Lewis Smyth, recording
secretary; Mrs. W. 1.
the library of Westfield. Mrs
A. L. Downs presented a
framed picture of President
Jefferson Davis. Both gifts
were from the U.D. C.
Chapter.
The audience joined in
singing Dixie and America.
hollowing the exercises a
delightful luncheon was held
at the New Perry Hotel.
Wreaths were placed on
the Confederate Monuments
and Confederate Flags were
placed on the graves of all
Confederate Veterans in the
Evergreen Cemetery.

of crosses; Mrs. Ben
Newberry Sr. registrar.
Mrs. Ben Newberry gave
an interesting program on
little known facts about the
life of General Stonewall
Jackson.
Delicious refreshments
were served by the hostesses
preceding the meeting.
Perry Store
Back On Food
Stamp Program
Williamson Grocery, a
Perry. Ga.. food store owned
by John Williamson, has
been reinstated in the
Houston County food stamp
program, according to the
US. Department of
Agriculture's Food and
Nutrition Service.
Begional officials said
USDA granted a stay of their
administrative action
disqualifying the store from
participation in the program
pending administrative
review of the disquali
fication.
The USDA order which
was effective April 15, 1972,
it was noted, called for a six
months’ disqualification of
the store on the grounds that
thsstore sold ineligible items
for USDA food coupons and
failed to give food stamp
customers proper change

Mrs. Linda M. Bell of
Perry will complete her
student teaching assignment
at the end of this semester
Mrs. Bell, a senior at
Wesleyan College, Macon,
was assigned to the biology
department at the Perry-
High School.

Houston AA Group
Marks First Year
The Houston Lake
Alcoholics Anonymous group
recently held its first an
niversary meeting at the
lake behind the Houston
County Correctional In
stitution. Barbecued chicken
and catfish were served,
along with dishes brought in
by some of the outside AA
members.
Registration began at 2:30
p.m., with the meeting called
to order at 3 p.m. by Hugh A.
Attending were 22 prison
