May is Senior Citizens Month, and Mr. and Mrs. V. W. Snipes of 805 Gordon
Street in Perry have been chosen to represent our Senior Citizens in Perry and
Houston County. Although they are no longer young and Mrs. Sniies is blind,
both are still active, sueful citizens of the community.

County Department of
Family and Children Ser-
vices had a program on
Adult Services May 17 at the
Eastgate Bank of Perry
community room. Miss
Martha Chambliss, Adult
Services Consultant of the
State Office Staff, spoke to
the local FACS staff.
One m every ten
Americans has reached his
65th birthday. This means
there are more than 20
million older people in our
population of over 200
million. The 1970 U.S. Census
gives a total of 3,574 adults
over age 60 living in Houston
County and it would appear
that now this number would
reach at least 4000.
In November, 1971 the
second White House Con
ference on the Aging was
held in Washington, D.C.
Among the subjects covered
were income, health,
transportation, nutrition,
housing, recreation,
spiritual well being and
employment and retirement.
On April 11, 1972 the Middle
Georgia Area Planning
Commission held a group
meeting on services to the
Aging with existing services
and needs evaluated. This
MGPC committee plans to
continue its work in this
area.
May 14-21 has been
designated as National
Nursing Home Week and
citizens are invited to visit
the nursing homes in their
community. Houston County
has five such facilities which
represent a total of 391 beds.
The vast majority of the
aging live with relatives or
by themselves. Many of
these are in isolated areas
and are in special need of
services.

of Education is offering a
service of Adult Vocational
Education Classes to provide
our community with op
portunities for continuing
their education during the
evening hours. All courses
are being offered at Nor
thside High School with
registration being held June
1 from6:ooP.M. til8:00 P.M.
All citizens are invited to
participate in the course that
interest them most.

At Southside School
Both parents and students
were captivated with the
activities at the May Day
Festival held at Southside
Elementary School Friday,
May sth.
There was something for
everyone: There were plays,
spelling bees, wrapping of
the May Pole, Modern
dances, square dances,
stunts, tumbling, relay races
Perryan Wins 17 Ribbons
At Annual Rose Show
“God grows the roses, I
only tend them" was David
A. Phelps’ reply to
congratulations on the
winning of seventeen ribbons
for his nineteen entries using
twenty three blooms in the
Seventh Annual Rose Show
held in Macon during the
weekend.
Mr. Phelps won Queen of
the Show and Best Group of
Three in stages of bloom
i bud, exhibition, full bloom)
with the Charlotte Arm
strong rose. He also won
King of the Show silver
award with his Fragrant
Cloud rose.
For winning nine blue
ribbons, Mr. Phelps won the
sweepstakes award which is

The program began in
doors with an introduction to
May Day by the Second
Grade. Then the First Grade
in adorable costumes
amused everyone with their
dramatization of nursery
rhymes. Lisa and Kathy
Roberts with Wallace
Williams presented an in
strumental, and Delma
the Thomas B. Harrell
Trophy a rotating trophy
administered yearly by the
Macon Men's Garden Club.
David won one blue ribbon
each for the following roses:
Apollo, X, Granada
Peace, Peach Beauty, and
American Pillow. He also
received six red second
place ribbons, one yellow
third place and one white
fourth place ribbon.
Mr. Phelps is a member of
the Macon Men’s Garden
Club and the Middle Georgia
Hose Society. He served as
co-chairman of classification
for the show held Saturday
and Sunday at the C and S
Bank. Mrs. Phelps also
worked in classification
during the Show.

Davis recited the poem,
“The May Morning”. The
Third Grade offered an in
terpretation of the Pledge of
Allegiance to the Flag. A five
act play entitled “Little Big
Red Riding Hood” was
presented by the Sixth
Grade, followed by a variety
of dances done by the fifth
grade.
The indoor program was
concluded with a spelling bee
in which grades four, five
and six participated. Bruce
Woodard and Dorothy King
were the outstanding
spellers.
Following a lunch of
turkey and dressing
everyone adjourned out
doors for the field events.
