Vi SCENE
By To m Donlol
Wives, if camping is a chore instead of a
pleasure it’s time that you re-trained the menfolk
and the children and let them enjoy the delights of
fixing the meals on the family camping trips. By
some pre-trip planning at home combined with
preparation, meals can be prepared that are easy
to fix, easy to clean up after and fully nutritious
for most of the family. As you know, everything
tastes good on a camping trip and usually the only
requirement is that there be plenty of it
One of tfie foods that is overlooked in our part of
the country more so than others is the good,
wholesome camp stew made many different ways
with many different ingredients. One of my
favorites is made with ground beef, tomatoes,
onions and noodles. The ground beef and onions
are sauteed together and then added to a pot of
tomatoes and stewed for a while and then the
noodles are added after being cooked just prior to
mealtime. The stew can be seasoned to taste and
for an added flavor chili powder will give it more
gusto. Most of this meal can be prepared at home
and refrigerated in separated containers and just
added to the pot about an hour before mealtime.
Another easy food is hotdogs cooked over the
camp fire by each individual using his own
skewer. By doing this, the only necessary dishes
to mess up would be a cup for your drink and
maybe a paper napkin to hold the hotdog bun.
For breakfast the different cereals that are
packaged in individual boxes which can be cut and
used as bowls provide a good, wholesome start on
the morning with the boxes being disposed of in
the campfire with no dishes to wash.
Another good idea on a camping trip is to grill as
much as possible since it is easy and leaves little
to be cleaned up after preparation and always has
a better flavor than fixed any other way. Don’t
overlook barbequed chicken, broiled fish, ham
burgers or your favorite roast. A good way to fix
roast is to put it on the grill, turn it often for the
first 5 or 10 minutes and then place it in tinfoil
covered with carrots, onions, and potatoes that
have all been diced and seal this package in
double strength tinfoil. Then place the sealed
package on the grill and turn about every ten
minutes for 20 to 40 minutes, depending on how
large the roast is and how rare your family likes
their meat and you’ll have a complete dinner that
is as delicious as any fixed in any kitchen.
Corn on the cob is always a favorite and is easy
to fix in the summer by grilling the corn with the
shuck on it just as it comes from the stalk. No
preparation is given to the corn but the ears with
the shucks on are roasted for about 20 minutes on
the grill over the open coals turning each ear
about every 3 or 4 minutes. The outer shucks will
turn brown and appear to be burnt but when
shucked back, the corn will be delicious steamed
in its own juices and the silks will peel away as
easily as the shucks. Add lots of butter and salt
and you’ve never had a better ear of corn.
Needless to say, summer is the time for all
types of good raw, fresh vegetables that require
little or no preparation other than maybe peeling
and can be used to trim the lunch and dinner meal.
As wholesome a dessert as possible is fresh fruit
and cream with a little sugar dashed on top.
So, Mother and Wives, plan your meals before
you go camping, do as much preparation at home
as possible and then announce to the family that
on this camping trip, they are going to be the chefs
and you are going to be the recipient of their good
works. Give everybody a jod and everybody will
have a good time.
Big Braves
Fireworks
Show Set
The Atlanta Braves and
Sterling Beer will once again
provide baseball fans with
the world's largest aerial
fireworks show July 4 at
Atlanta Stadium.
This year the display, a
non-stop 45 minute spec
tacular. will be presented
between games of the twi
night doubleheader between
the Braves and the Chicago
Cubs. Game time for the
opening contest is 6:05 p.m.
The fireworks will follow and
then the evening s second
game.
It’ll be a fitting In
dependence Day celebration.
Rockets, some as large as 12
inches in diameter, will be
ignited every five seconds
and fired as high as 1,200 feet
during the show.
A similar program drew
one of the largest baseball
crowds of the season to
Atlanta Stadium last year
despite bad weather. Most of
the more than 36,000 fans
stayed until the show's finale
about 1:30 the next morning.
The baseball games
themselves should provide
fans with plenty of ex
citement. The Cubs will
come to Atlanta featuring
second baseman Glenn
Beckert and shortstop Don
Kessinger, both All-Star
candidates, plus colorful
manager l.eo Durocher.
The doubleheader will kick
off a four-game series with
Chicago. The Cubs and
Braves will play single
games starting at 8.05 p.m.
July 5 and 6.
There is no extra charge
for the July 4 fireworks
display, sponsored by

McWhorter’s Two-Hitter
Clips Cardinals 7-0
■
The above headline should
say Alex McWhorter 7
Warner Robins Cardinals 0.
The reasoning behind this is
that Alex pitched a
tremendous game for his
“B” team by limiting the
opponents to 2 hits striking
out 14 batters (in a possible
18 outs) and helping his own
cause by blasting a 2 run
homer, Debro Hill went 2 for
3 lashing a homer in the
process. Carlton Clarington
Jr. had the only other Tiger
safety.

in this “A”league game and
only walked 4. The Darts
ruined Patey’s shutout bid in
the second as Robert
Burgess walked, moved to
second on a passed ball, was
wild pitched to third and
scored on a wild pitch. Perry
only got two hits when Carl
Walker singled in the 4th and
William Jordan doubled
in the sth. Perry’s Leon
Green was the losing pitcher
with wildness his problem.
Green struck out 11 - gave
two hits but seven walks
were his downfall. Patey and
Mike Campbell had the
Dodger hits.

Braves To Hold Clinic
In Atlanta Saturday
A super bargain for young
and old sports fans.
That’s the only way to
describe a $3 ticket to the
second annual Atlanta
Braves Super Sports Clinic
Saturday, July 8, at Atlanta

That single admission
ticket will admit the holder
to the four-hour clinic in the
afternoon and a reserved
area seat at the Braves’
game against the World
Champion Pittsburgh
Pirates that night.
The clinic, which will run
from 1:30 until 5:30, will
feature instruction on the
skills of baseball by the
Braves, football by the
Atlanta Falcons, basketball
triple and homer by both
Bert Harvey and Fred
Marshall, and a 3 run blast
by Whitt Smith. Harvey had
a perfect day at the plate,
going 5 for 5. Westmoreland!
Marshall, John Jackson and
Mike Harding went 4 for 5.
Panthers getting 3 hits were
Joe Thomas, Lee Jones,
Richie Morrison, Tres
Sinyard, Whitt Smith, and
John Scott. Mike Parker had
two Perry safeties.
Pirates Gary Bramlett,
Darryl Albritton and
Marvin Nobles had 3 hits
each. Steve Harris,
Theodore Labadie, Terry
Allen, Jim Fudge and Ken
Hammock had 2 Pirate hits
apiece, Pirates with a hit
were Brian Lewis, Jeff
Merritt, Joey Robbins and
Johnny Bryant, Mark Green
and Garnett Clark were in
the game for Perry,
McWhorter had good
defensive support from his
team who made only one
error behind him.
The Tigers remain un

continue to breathe down the
Tiger necks with only one
loss/hat one at the hands of
the Tigers.
