SOCIAL
SECURITY
QUESTIONS A ANSWERS
“Teleservice” is offered
by the Macon Social Security
Office. “Teleservice” means
that you can handle most of
your business with social
security by telephone. You
may file an application for
retirement, disability,
survivors or health in
surance from the privacy of
your own home. You may
also change your address,
get an application for a
social security number,
report work activity, or just
ask a question and you can
do this with no fuss, rush,
long waiting or parking
problem. Give your Social
Security Office a call. The
number is 743-0381.
Q. I live 15 miles out from
Perry and have nb way of
getting to town to meet with
the representative there. I
broke both my legs in an
accident two months ago. My
doctor has told me I should
put in for disability social
security since I will probably
be out of work for more than
a year. Can some
arrangement be made so I
could put in for my
disability?
R.D., Henderson
A. Yes. You should call the
Macon Social Security Office
at once. The telephone
number is 743-0381. The
disability application can be
completed by phone, mailed
to you for signature,
returned with any other
evidence that might be
needed.
Q. 1 am 56 years old and a
widow. I do not have any
children. Is there any benefit
that I could qualify for from
Social Security?
N. 0., Perry
A. If you are totally
disabled you might qualify
for disabled widow’s
benefits. Otherwise you

Q. I am a widow with two
children. We are all
receiving social security
benefits. I plan to go back to
work soon. Will my earnings
affect the checks my
children get?
C. Perry
A. No. The only check
affected would be yours, if
you made over SI6BO during
the year. The children’s
checks will not be affected
by your earnings.
Q. I am 62 years old now. I
am a teacher and plan on
continuing to teach until I
am at least 65. I have heard
that since I am not working
any during the summer, I
can get my social security. Is
this true?
D. Perry
A. Yes. Any month in
which you do not make over
$l4O after you are 62, you are
eligible to receive social
security checks. During the
summer months when you do
not work, you can receive
your checks, and then when
you go back to work in
September, they will be
stopped. Call the social
security office in Macon now
to apply for these benefits.
Q. I understand that
disability benefits are not
payable for the first six
months I am disabled.
Should I just wait until I have
been disabled six months
before I file for disability.
C.D., Perry
A. Definitely not. File for
your disability benefits as
soon as you find out that you
will be disabled for at least a
year. It takes several
months to process a
disability application and by
filing as soon as possible,
everything can be processed
before the end of the six
months.
