Georgia farm, business and
banking leaders will take off
Sunday, July IS, for a flying
six-day tour of Nebraska and
California agricultural centers
in a search for fresh ideas on
new agricultural production
and marketing methods.
The event is the seventh
Marketer Tour sponsored by
the Citizens and Southern
National Rank and the Univer
sity of Georgia Cooperative
Extension Service.
Traveling by chartered jet,
the group will visit Nebraska's
cattle and grain country and
the orchards of California.
“It’s something of a con
tinuing education program for
us,” said Fred W. Greer, Jr.,
C&S vice president and head of
the bank’s agribusiness depart
ment. “We expect to learn
more about the highly
specialized agri-industry of
these states, particularly with
an eye toward applicability to
Georgia agribusiness.
“Previous Marketer lours to
California, North Carolina,
Illinois, Washington, Oregon,
New England, Colorado, Texas,
Wisconsin and Michigan have
been most productive in
broadening our approach to
this industry.”
The Nebraska leg of the trip
will include looks at cattle
breeding and feeder programs,
a machinery and equipment
manufacturing operation, agri
cultural research programs,
operations in the areas of
irrigation, crops and meat
production, and the start-to
finish program for milo, a
major grain on the western
market.
In California, pollution and
the environment, as they relate
to the agricultural industry,
head the bill. Fruit processing
and marketing and dairy
operations follow, com
plemented by talks with re
search and extension personnel
in the San Joaquin Valley.
Upon their return, specialists
from the Extension Service will
summarize and evaluate the
results of the trip and release
their findings for distribution
to the 75 participants. The
participants, in turn, will share
their knowledge with agri
businessmen throughout the
stale.
