Denny A Brave
Denny McLain’s debut with the Braves Tuesday
night didn’t go like a Hollywood script would have
it, but the two-time Cy Young Award winner did
perform well enough to warrant a spot in Luman
Harris’ starting rotation.
McLain’s start against the Chicago Cubs was
his first mound appearance in two weeks and first
start in the big leagues since early May. For his
nights work Denny pitched seven full innings and
faced two Cubbies in the eighth, before a cloud
burst arrived at Atlanta Stadium and washed out
the rest of the action. McLain gave up nine hits
(including a very cheap triple to Santo in the
seventh) that kept McLain from being a 3-2
winner, and wound up with no decision as the
game ended in a 3-3 tie.
The former thirty-game winner pitched well
enough to win. Harris and his Braves are very
fortunate to have a hurler of McLain’s caliber
with them the rest of the season. Denny may have
found a new home in Atlanta. 53,000 fans were on
hand for his “new beginning”.
Cha-Cha Departs
The trade that brought Denny McLain to
Atlanta has been one of controversy. Orlando
Cepeda, who has been one of the Braves top hit
ters for over three seasons, was shipped to the
Oakland A’s in exchange for McLain.
The beef from a lot of fans is why did the Braves
give up so much for a worn out pitcher who has
been a loser for the past three seasons. For one
reason, Cepeda has been riding a knotch on the
Braves bench this year complaining of assorted
ailments. When the ’72 campaign got underway
Aaron started at first base and thanks to the
improvement of Dusty Baker in the garden, Aaron
was given the first sack job to prolong his career.
As Cha-Cha’s “injuries” disappeared the $95,000
a year first sacker wanted to know why he wasn’t
getting any playing time. Harris obliged and gave
Cepeda a few starts at first base, but then the
“ailments” started again.
In June Cepeda got tired of the way the Braves
were treating him, so he jumped the team. The
Baby Bull returned a few days later, but had
made it clear he didn’t want to remain in Atlanta.
McLain, on the other hand, was dissatisfied with
his ball club, having been demoted to the low
minors to regain his old pitching form. Last week
the big trade was announced.
Cepeda went to a club that is sure to get a post
season playoff spot. Plus he will get a chance to
play more, providing he wants to. McLain too,
was aided by the swap. The Braves have the
weakest pitching in the National League.
McLain’s arrival can only help Atlanta’s pitiful
mound corps.
With Baker and Evans back from their military
obligations the Braves are making a run at cat
ching the skidding Dodgers for third place in the
NL West. McLain will help.
The Cepeda-McLain trade was a perfect trade
for both teams involved.
