Had any triumphs (minor

your friends react when you
told them the good news?
With hugs and kisses for the

response drab, insipid,
perhaps not even there? ...

depressed, disappointed, or
furious that afternoon you
announced, “I’m getting
married - I got the
nomination -1 won it -1 sold
it,” and they only said (with
patient boredom), ‘‘Oh!, or,
more generously, “Oh,
really?” So! It becomes
obvious these turncoat
friends don’t want you to
succeed; they’d prefer you to
remain trapped in whatever
role you play for them, or
maybe just to fail!
You’ve worked hard,
looked good, stepped on no
one’s toes ... at least not so
hard that the individual
limped thereafter! And,
most important, you wanted
something badly enough to
actually go out and get it.
Hardly a cause for
backhanded compliments or
a left jab to your pride from
the sour-grapers.
Consider the following
series of events. You enjoy
a major triumph: you
haven’t needed a
tranquilizer, analyst, cigaret
for a month. Hooray! Then a
minor triumph takes place:
there wasn’t a single split
end last time you sham
pooed and, for the first
time in years, your hair
doesn’t cost you a bundle. An
uncertain triump also pends:
your roommate has ex
tended an invitation to you
for a summer vacation with
her in Morocco.
You make modest mention
of the major triumph, only to
find your friend’s eyes are
slithering in their sockets.
What do you mean you feel
good? She knows you’re an
emotional disaster.
Decisively, she cuts in with
“I know you ... you’ll be a
wreck by tomorrow.” No
split ends? She’ll say
something like “Wait till you
get to East Hampton - your
hair will turn to shredded
wheat.” Morocco? “With
her? You know what kind of
reputation she and her
friends have!
No, you weren’t wrong to
want affirmation or even a
little support from your
friend. You thought she
would want to share your
glory. But, instead, she
denied, belittle, begrudged,
and even made you feel
guilty about small (but
important successes.
Thoroughly mean-spirited!
And there’s a lot of this going
around.
One day, when I pass those
bar exams (I confess dreams
of glory), I hope to hear a lot
of “Fantastics... “I’m proud

Movie Review
Have you seen a very
wonderful movie called
“What’s Up, Doc . ” When it
comes to movie comedy, the
1930 s were genuine Good Old
Days, vintage years. Now,
Barbara Streisand and Ryan
O’Neal, two very 1970 stars,
pay a compliment to that era
with their screwball antics in
an up-to-date mix-up in
volving four identical
briefcases (or you might
say, overnight cases). One
contains underwear and
books belonging to Judy
(Barbara Streisand), a
wandering perennial
graduate student who is
determined to capture
Howard (Ryan O’Neal).
Howard or Steve, if you
prefer, is a sort of musico
geologist. Nobody else wants
either of those cases. But
thieves and the government
are hot after the remaining
pair, one stuffed with
dowager’s jewelry, and the
other with Top Secret
Papers. Only which case is
which?
The snooping, swiping and
chasing routines range all
over a San Franciso hotel
and finally over hilly streets
in a wind-up guaranteed to
dissolve any audience in
hilarity. While the stars go
along with the gags (in
cluding a stab at Love
Story), Madeline Kahn
(Eunice Bunrs) grabs a fat
share of the scenes for
herself, as Ryan’s bossy
fiancee. Don’t let the name
“Streisand” scare you into
musicals. It appears that she
has departed from the
smash-bang musical genre
to a regular little movie and
one of her own generation!
