Gets Charged
On May 2, 1972, a federal
grand jury in Atlanta
returned a true bill of
indictment against George
Hutto charging him with
impersonating a federal
employee. According to
Assistant U.S. Attorney Ray
Taylor, the maximum
penalty for a person con
victed of this offense is SI,OOO
fine and three years im
prisonment.
Mr. Taylor explained that
Hutto, an agent of
Associated Doctors Health
and Life Insurance Company
of Birmingham, was
charged with falsely
representing himself as an
employee of Medicare in
order to sell a health in
surance policy to an elderly
citizen of Duluth, Georgia.
Mr. Hutto allegedly told a
Medicare beneficiary, Mrs.
Laura E. Love, that pur
chase of an insurance policy
issued by Associated Doctors
Health and Life Insurance
Company would be
necessary or she would lose
her Medicare protection.
Mr. Taylor indicated that
many similar complaints
were under investigation
throughout the Southeast
and that it was possible that
other indictments would
follow.

next year, beginning in July.
Broome said his Agency
received a small GEO grant
last year to conduct a
Registration of the Unem
ployed. This registration
produced profiles on 3,934
unemployed persons in the
12-county area. An interim
follow-up program, in
cooperation with the Georgia
Department of Labor,
County School Systems, and
Area Vocational-Technical
Schools, organized an effort
to: (1) find suitable em

unemployed persons as
possible, and (2) develop

Results of the interim
follow-up program have
been gratifying and ex
ceeded all expectations,
according to Broome. Don
Mullis, Community Services
Coordinator, for the Agency
has headed up Manpower
efforts in the present
program.
The latest count shows that
973 persons have been em
ployed, through the com
bined assistance of the above
Agencies. Numerous
training opportunities have
also been developed for
many of the registrants in an
effort to upgrade their skills
and educational level.
Broome emphasized that
the latest Manpower Grant
will enable the Agency to
accelerate its efforts in
reducing the high unem
ployment rate in the Heart of
Georgia CAC area. The
current number of unem
ployed persons, by county,
as estimated by the Georgia
Department of l,abor are as
follows; (unemployment
rate) Bleckley, 90 (3.0);
Dodge 490 ( 9.6); Laurens,
500 ( 3.7); Montgomery, 60
(3.7); Peach, 230 (4.4);
Pulaski, 210 (6.9); Telfair,
310(8.2); Treutlen, 100(7.9);
Twiggs, 130 (5.8); Wheeler,
70 (5.3); and Wilcox, 170
(8.2). The unemployment
rate for Houston County is
combined with Bibb County,
with a rate of 3.5.
Broome emphasized that
everything possible will be
done in an effort to reduce
the jobless rate in its service
area during the next year.
