* Perry VFW Post Is On The Move *
The original charter for
Houston County Post 6126,
Veterans of Foreign Wars
was issued on March 14,1946
with Jerry Davis as the first
commander. Membership
for the first year totaled 71.
Meetings in the early days
of the post were held either
at the American Legion
Home or the New Perry
Hotel.
The post was named for
Walter B. Whitten, the first
local combatant in World
War II to make the supreme
sacrifice for his country. He
was the son of W. H. Whitten
of Perry and the late Mrs.
Whitten, and the brother of

Walter B. Whitten was
born in Morgan County,
Georgia and graduated from
Madison High School. The
family moved to Perry
shortly after that, and
Walter entered the military
service from Houston
County.
At the outbreak of
hostilities Walter was
stationed in the Philippine
Islands, assigned to an
Ordianance Group with the
U.S. Army Air Corps, and

The Walter B. Whitten
Post has served the com
munity well over the years in
charity drives and other
projects. The post was one of
the original sponsors of a
Little League team, sup
ported a Cub Scout Pack and
a Boy Scout Troop. Each
spring the VFW promotes its
annual “Buddy Poppy” sale
and donates the proceeds to
local youth work.

the present building was

pleted three years later, with
the dedication on February

The dedication marked
three significant events for
the local VFW Post. It
commemorated the com
pletion of 20 consecutive
years as a veterans
brotherhood dedicated to the
support of civic and com

the completion of the post

veterans who have fought or
