County Moving Closer To
Obtaining Election Board
By Bobby Branch
There seems to be a “lot of
strong feeling” about the
establishment of an election
board in Houston County,
according to what one
elected official told The
Home Journal this week.
The setting up of a county
election board has been
talked about for several
years but it wasn’t until the
March term of the Houston
County grand jury made a
recommendation to establish
such a board that any serious
thought has been given the
idea. The board, if
established, would conduct

and assist voters in any
manner they could.
The Home Journal
recently published an
editorial endorsing the idea
of the establishment of a
County election board as
well as an election board for
the City of Perry. One of the
reasons given for an election
board in the City of Perry,
was because of the two-sided
interpretation of the City
election of last December 7,
that resulted in a court ac

the Perry Mayor and one
City Councilman. However,
that case has now been
settled and the City won the
case over the petitioners.
It is not known if the
present grand jury will
appoint a committee to look
into the possible establish
ment of an election board but
many observers feel the
grand jury will take such
action and a study will get
underway soon on the
matter.
If the committee came up
with a recommendation that
a board be formed, the
matter would then have to go
to the state legislature in the
form of a bill before the
actual board could be ap
pointed. The board would be
appointed to set term by the
grand jury.
Some officials feel a board
is needed because of the
complexities now involved
with voting procedures,
voting machines and the
organizing of good poll
workers and managers and
all the other details involved
with conducting an election.
Houston County has not
had any real problems with
elections in recent years but

establishing an election
board it will insure a smooth
and uncomplicated string of
elections in the future. It is
very likely that the Houston
County Election Board will
conduct the next Primary
and General elections here in
1976.
