The third and final game was a stem winder right to the final out. Some of the finest defense ever seen in this age group took place in the series. Super play after super play was the routine. Both infields were superb! The Panthers had Bert Harvey at first, Richie Morrison at second, Whitt Smith at shortstop, Mike Harding at third, John Scott at Pitcher and Mike Parker at catcher. The Pirates placed Darryl Albritton at first, Lee Baase at second, Marvin “Tumpot” Nobles at shortstop, Ken Hammock at third, Jim Fudge at catcher and Zack Sorrows at Pitcher. These infields were great and by virtue of the fact they handled so many of the plays Albritton and Nobles of the Pirates and Harvey and Smith of the Panthers were standouts. Every player on both teams did his best and each boy made his con tribution to some fine baseball play. Game l:Close all the way. Great defense both sides. Low scores every inning. For the Panthers Whitt Smith and Bert Harvey excelled on defense, Harvey and Joe Thomas had 4 hits each with Thomas scoring 4 runs. Blake Westmoreland hit a solo homer. Westmoreland, John Scott and Richie Morrison drove in 2 runs each. For the Pirates Marvin Nobles. Ken Hammock and Darryl Albritton were great on defense. Steve Harris, Mark Green, Zack Sorrows, Joey Robbins, Albritton and Jim Fudge led with 3 hits each. Robbins scored 3 runs. Stephen Harris homered. Game 2; The two turning points were the Panthers loose play in the second to allow 8 runs and the great Pirate defense in the 4th allowing only one run. Baase and Sorrows of the Pirates had 4 hits apiece while Green and Sorrows scored 3 runs each. Harvey led the Pan thers with 4 hits while he and Morrison scored 3 runs each and Whitt Smith drove in 3 runs. Harvey homered for the Panthers and Harris did the same for the Pirates. Game 3: This was an all out, deep down, real battle again with the edge to the Panthers. Defense was the key as the Pirates were held to a run in the first and only two in the third. Harding got a double play to stem the Pirate outburst in the second and Smith pulled off a triple play which may have signalled the end. Scott handled a lot of plays well. Westmoreland, Jackson, Smith, Ferguson, Mims and Marshall had 3 hits each. Smith drove in 3 runs and he, Jackson and Thomas scored twice each. For the Pirates I-ee Baase homered for 2 runs.
