I’ve been working at one, for about eight weeks this summer in a city long renowned for its unbuttoned qualities - Macon. I had eight one-of-a-kind weeks, met some people I loved, and had a bank account to show for it all. Why did I choose this for my summer occupation? Certainly not for fresh air, sunny skies, and spacious vistas, but for the job, the freedom, the social life, the experience of being in dependent. And I found just that! But of course I wouldn’t guarantee satisfaction at first glance. When I first walked into the enormous corporation, it was sort of a physical shock. 1 guess I felt the way many girls do who are secure and self-possessed at home - suddenly you’re out of place and downright uptight after five minutes inside. I made an immediate exit from that feeling when I got into the bustle of activity that was going on. Even if you were to stop in a moment of confusion and indecision, someone might bump into you and look at you as if to say, “Anyone who stops here deserves to be bumped." My first reaction was to turn right back around, jump in the car, and settle com fortably in front of the Today Show. I just couldn’t be taking this seriously! After a short self-debate, I accepted the challenge. Jeans, working gloves, and my chewing gum. I kept thinking, “If only they could see me now. Have I ever done this before? “God, no!” All the better. I began with a professional wrapper on the 5x6 line. You’ll learn to press 140 egg cartons in 10 seconds, wrap and stamp them, place the bundle on a particular skid and start over again without falling behind. Once you’ve proved you can handle this alone, you will be given a crack at doing it all by yourself. At times, I felt like I might be in com petition with Willie Shoemaker. Working at a plant, believe it or not, gradually becomes a jumble of happenings - lots of laughs (along with very hard work), a sly remark from Tom now and then, and someone like B. J to keep those “filler flats” running nice and smooth. And on the whole, I had a beautiful summer there. Because it’s not the working drunk S9O; Jack W. Duffell, reckless driving and run stop sign S3B; Norman Durham, discharging firearms in city S3O; Willie Solomon, fighting and disorderly S2B; Smith Jr. Boyd, speeding S2B; David Carter, public drunk $lB. 4-Hers Visit Rock Eagle This past week Houston County 4-Hers attended camp at Rock Eagle, the State 4-H Club Center located near Eaton ton. In addition to the usual cam ping activities of swimming and hiking, they learned more about photography, plants, and soils, money management, good grooming, embryology and other special interests. Sports, such as softball, volleyball, badmiton, horse shoes, and putt-putt golf were also available. conditions but the people, the personal friendships that you acquire that made the summer indelible. One warm day will slip into the next once you’ve learned your trade so well that it doesn’t harass or exhaust you. Somehow, you’ll find time to swim and meditate on “Clockwork Orange”, wrap a suntanned hand around a pepsi cola, and be, in the end, a sum mer-child. ISSUES AND ANSWERS f- Why did you campaign so hard? I knew my opponent was initially sponsored by the establishment. 2- Why did you develop a specif it platform? You can not serve the people in generalities. 3- Why did you attend all public forums, work door-to-door, campaign in shopping centers, coach a baseball team, develop tv and radio ads, and pass out 30,000 cards? Not working does not work anymore. People respect a candidate who works hard to serve people where they are. They want to vote for a man who likes people enough to see and help them. VOTE FOR THE CANDIDATE WITH A SPECIFIC PLATFORM AMD COMMITTED TO: -1- A STATE TOURIST CENTER IN PERRY. -2- AN INDUSTRIAL PARK AT PERRY AIRPORT. -3- BETTER STATE SUPPORT OF PUBLIC SCHOOLS. -4- IMPARTIAL TREATMENT OF ALL PERRYANS AND NO OBLIGATION TO THE ESTABLISHMENT. -5- NO STATE TAX INCREASE. -6- NO MORE SALES TAX ON PRESCRIPTION DRUGS. -7- NO AD VALOREM TAX FOR SENIOR CITIZENS EARNING LESS THAN $7,590 AN NUALLY.
