How much do Houston County residents stand to gain as a result of the hike in social security payments, soon to go into effect What will be the average size of retirement checks to local beneficiaries, under the new schedule. Based upon the latest figures from the Social Security Administration, which give the number of recipients in the area and the amount they were getting at the beginning of 1971, their total benefits will be approximately $614,000 greater per year than they were before. During the last four months of this year, when the new rates will be effective, their payments will rise by $204,000. The new bill, as voted by Congress, provides an across-the-board boost of 20 percent for the 28 million retired or disabled workers and their dependents who are getting social security checks. Under the new scale, the annual payment for a retired single worker would go from an average of $1,596 to $1,932; for the average retired couple, from $2,676 to $3,240; for the single worker with (Mfm us KTuulenanl (&o'otxnov JUS (Capitol LESTER MADDOX AUWI *», &tOt 3033* CC^TARV LI CUTE NAN T GOVERNOR EXECUTIVE SECRETARY March 17, 1972 The Honorable Stanley E. Smith, Jr. State Senator Drawer F (x.- Perry, Georgia 31069 Dear Senator: Another session of the Georgia General Assembly has ended, and I am pleased to take this opportunity to write and thank and commend you for the most outstanding job you continue to do as a public servant. Although we are both independent men and do not always vote alike and take the same position on all issues, I want you to know that I truly admire you for being your own man. You are not a fence-straddler on any issue but a man of courage, conviction and forthrightness which never leaves me or others you work with in doubt as to where you stand. You not only work during the regular and special sessions of the Georgia General Assembly, but you work throughout the year as a Georgia Senator in service to your constit uents and to Georgia. In fact, during my years of service in government, I have yet to find one person to be more able, more dedicated, more dependable and more productive than Stanley Smith. I am proud that I was privileged to appoint you as Chairman of the most important committee on Economy, Reorganization and Efficiency in Government. In my judgment, naming you as chairman of this committee was one of the best day's work I have done at the State Capitol. There is no doubt that your service in life has been a sacrifice to yourself and famil .d has cost you tens of thousands of dollars in personal income, but I know that your work as Chairman of ERE&C has saved the taxpayers of this state tens of millions of dollars. Further, your voice and leadership on the most important committees on Appropriations, Banking and Finance and Rules provides you with a position of authority and service reached by few men in government. I know that you often fight against great odds and often your head is blooded but you are a fighter and stand your ground. You are the kind of man we need more of in government, and I urge you to continue to serve your people as their State Senator. They and all Georgians are fortunate to have you serving in the Senate. I appreciate your counsel, advice and support and for the fine manner in which you often serve in my position as President and Presiding Officer. Trusting that 1972 will be a good year for you and looking forward to our continued association at the State Capitol, 1 am Sincerely, 'S Lester MaddcA ' LM/jg PAID POLITICAL AD PAGE 12-A PERRY, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, AUG. 3, 1972 maximum benefits, from $2,592 to $3,096, and, for the couple getting maximum, from $3,888, to $4,632. just how much a worker collects after retirement is directly related to his earnings during his active years, and, in turn, to his con tributions to the pension fund. The latest annual report of the Social Security Administration shows payments going to Houston County beneficiaries at the average yearly rate of $927 per recipient Beginning in the early part of October, when the first checks reflecting the increase will arrive, covering the month of September, the local average will be $1,112 per year. What it adds up to, for the local community as a whole, is pension receipts next year erf ap proximately $3,686,000, as compared with the 1970 total of $3,072,000. The increases will be automatic. No application for them need be made. As for the rise in the tax rate needed to pay for the bigger benefits, there will be none until January Ist, according to the new legislation.
