PERRY, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, AUG. 24, 1972 32 PAGES PAGE 1-A Kellwood Co. Truman praised the Perry chamber for their work in the community in industrial and business develop ment. The General also noted that the Perry chamber had one of the outstanding executives vice president’s in the state, referring to Elwyn McKinney. Truman outlined the many jobs being done by his dept., mainly promoting in dustrial and tourist development in the state. The chamber members were shown television promotion spots being prepared by the dept, to be shown all over the country to promote Georgia. Lee, a native of Perry and now Warner Robins at torney, got a total of 4,521 votes in the primary to Harmon’s 3,551 votes. Third man in that race was Joel Willis with 2,882 votes. Harmon practices law in Centerville. Apparently there has been little interest created in the District Attorney’s race, which is considered by many to be one of the most im portant responsibility-laden offices in the County. The District Attorney is known as “the voice of the people” in a court of law. The D.A. post is now held by Avon Buice, who was appointed in 1970 by Gov. Jimmy Carter. Buice chose not to run for another term and plans to go into private law practice next year. Incumbent Commissioner Frank Rozar is being challenged for his post on the Commission by political newcomer Quinton Moody, Rozar is a Perry farmer and businessman and Moody is a retired civil service em ployee and former Houston County deputy sheriff. Rozar cornered 4,777 votes in the primary to Moody’s 3,802. Third man in that race was former Warner Robins City Councilman Archie Camp bell who got 2,684 votes. Voters are expected to turn out in relatively large numbers next Tuesday with one reason being that Houston County’s Sam Nunn is in a run-off race for the U.S. Senate with the in cumbent, appointed Senator David Gambrell. Nunn ran second to Gambrell in the August 8, primaries getting 23 per cent of the vote with Gambrell getting 33 per cent. Gambrell by far won the most counties in the state but Nunn lost a number of counties by less than 50 votes. Third man in the race, Ernest Vandiver, ran strong in those counties lost by Nunn. Former Gov. Ernest Vandiver has not officially endorsed anyone in the Senate race, but sources close to the former candidate i believe he is for Nunn in the I run-off. One news source reported that the former j governor may introduce Nunn at a major speaking I engagement before the run off next Tuesday. Counties of Houston and Peach in the joint airport project. Mayor Barton feels the airport is only about a year and a half from completion at this time. He indicated that the plans are set and the funding will be approved. The airport here now has a 2,500 foot runway. With the new 5,000 by 100 feet runway, the airport will be able to handle larger air craft, including business jets. There will also be a 5,000 foot taxi-way adjacent to the new runway, and a number of other im provements at the airport. Nunn already has the backing of former Gov. Marvin Griffin and Lester Maddox and rumors are that former Gov. Carl Sanders favors Nunn as his choice for the U.S. Senate.
