The View from
Carole's Corner S' *B
By Carole Bloodworth
I MJ
“Happy Father’s Day
Dad I’’ the kids call, and
tumble bumble they’re in his
lap and at his knee offering
their gifts proudly. Anxious
that their packages of love be
just what Dad wanted
What is inside the wrinkled
tissue paper and the tangled
ribbon ’’ Shirts, lies, golf balls,
wallets? The size and nature
of the gift is dependent en
tirely upon the size and nature
of the giver’s pocketbook The
love that comes with each gift
isn’t dependent on anything
It’s immeasurable.
Often the “I wrapped it
myself" package conceals an
“I made it myself" present
But fathers have such a
distorted sense of values when
it comes to this sort of thing
that it almost seems they’d
rather have a tie tac made
from elbow macaroni than an
engraved one made of solid
gold
This pride in the ac
complishments of their off
spring no matter how un
polished and unperfecled the
effort may be is one of two or
three trails that can be
ascribed to fathers collec
tively Mothers, however
different in personality and
temperament for the most
part, will fit loosely into a
common mold. Most of us do
pretty much the same things
for and with our children. But
fathers don't seem to be cut
from any particular pattern.
Mothers take their identity
from who they are (Billy’s
mom, Kay’s mom, etc.) Even
working mothers are seldom
identified in a child's mind by
the work they do. On the other
hand fathers have a definite
identity as a money maker as
well as a parent.
And as varied as the jobs
they go off to each morning is
their place and function in the
family make-up
One father changes diapers,
gives 2 A M bottles, and feeds
the cat Another will dress a
deer without baiting an eye,
but has to have help to put first
aid cream on his son’s surface
cut
Some dads can solve the
financial problems of the
world, but have trouble with
eighth grade math. Others can
and do tie sashes, find lost
" socks and give cough
(medicine. Some are pals,
playmates who never tire of
throwing balls and playing
• indians. Others couldn't put a
puzzle together or pretend to
m be a train if their life depended
on it.
And, of course, there are the
rare finds who do it all. Or the
less well known ones who don’t
do any of it
Whatever dads do at work
all day they aren't really
fathers until they get home.
And once there whether thfey
plant gardens, go fishing, play
golf, go hiking, dance and
sing, play chess, ride horses,
sit and chat, it is the rare
father who consistently
prefers to do it without the
company of his children.
There are precious few
fathers who don’t delight in
sharing their pleasures and
interests with their children.

of the excitement when he hits
his first ball or sees the seeds
he planted come to flower is
the other trait that fathers
everywhere seem to have in
common.
When we think of motherly
love we get sentimental and
bleary eyed, but seldom does
the idea of fatherhood bring
about these emotions. Yet a
father's love for all its being
expressed differently is just as
deep and heartfelt as is a
mother’s. And a child’s need
of love for his father causes
the relationship between
father and child to become one
of the strongest most mutually
satisfying experiences in our
world.
