How
to Use Your
Electric
Appliances
Wisely
All Day Long
Morning
A good time to think
small. If you own small ap
pliances such as a toaster,
fry pan and coffee maker,
conserve energy by using
them instead of the oven or
range to cook breakfdst. A
toasts*, for instance, uses
only one-eighth as much
energy as an oven to brown
a slice of bread And an
electric percolator takes
less than one-half as much
as perking coffee on a sur
face unit
All together now. Cooking
breakfast for the whole
family at one time, instead
of lor individuals will help
conserve electric energy
yours, too!
Stack the dishes in the
dishwasher and wait till
there's a full load This
saves energy needed to op
erate the appliance and to
heat the water as well In
average family use. a dish
washer requires about one
kilowatt hour a day that's
just over two cents' worth
at Georgia Power's aver
age price.
Noon
Early afternoon and late
evening are best times to
use electric energy for
household tasks. They're
"off peak". That’s a term
describing a period of low
usage, and simply means
I there’s hot as,much dc
mand for electricity as
there is in late afternoon
or early evening In our
service area, the highest
peaks come in late after
noon on hot summer days,
when nearly everybody
turns on air conditioning.
In producing electricity,
thochief fuel used by Geor
gia Power is coal During
peak, or high-usage, hours,
we sometimes have to use
oil to produce the addi
tional electricity people are
calling for. Oil is becoming
scarce and extremely high
priced. So, evcrybociy will
benefit if electric usage
can bo spread out more
evenly during the (fay and
throughout the year
When the demand is bal
anced, practically all the
electricity needed can be
produced from coal, which
is in adequate supply. Coal
pneesaro going up, too, but
not as rapidly as oil. So
whatever you do to use less
electricity during peak
hours helps conserve fuel
and energy.
An oven dinner uses less
energy. You can bake sev
eral foods at once with
about the same amount of
electricity as it takes to
bake one
Oven need cleaning? If
you have a modern, self
cleaning oven, conserve
energy by cleaning soon
after baking, thus making
use of retained heat. The
electricity required for
cleaning your oven costs
only ten cents or less. Since
these ovens are well insu
lated, less energy is re
quired for baking In them.
Try a shower instead of a
tubtonight. Takes about
' five gallons less water And
wafer heating is one of the
major uses for energy in a
home.
