Let’s Hear No More. . . .
The other night I heard several Perry High fans
discussing why Ike King was back with the
Panthers. Well, to set those folks straight, let me
say that Ike earned his way back on the varsity.
For the past three weeks Ike, and William Car
swell, have been running laps around the Perry
High football field. By a vote of the entire
Panther squad Ike and William would be rein
stated (they earned letters a year ago, but did not
come out for summer drills) if they each ran 100
miles, 400 laps around the football field.
It seems that when the 1974 summer drills
commenced Ike and William had decided against
playing football thhis fall. But, after second
thoughts and a few persuasions from other
sources, the two Panther stars from a year ago
changed their minds.
After consultation with the Panther squad,
head coach Bob Morrow capitulated and rein
stated King and Carswell to the team provided
they follow the provisions of the majority.
Ike and William completed their grugging 100-
mile journey to nowhere last week and were
permitted to play in last Friday night’s 9-0 Pan
ther win over Putnam County. Ike, a 1000-plus
yardage rusher a year ago, appeared to be in mid
season form as the Panthers number 33 raced
through the Eagles for 159 yards in 35 carries.
William, number 4, got in a lot of playing time and
did a good job at defensive back.
There are pros and cons concerning the King-
Carswell controversy; and I don’t care to hear
any more about it. These two kids have paid the
price and are ready to play football.
Cjouldn V Make It. .. .
I want to offer my apologies to the Perry teams
in the Houston County Optimist football program.
Last Saturday was the season opener for our kids
and I had planned to attend the festivities at
Moody Road Park and snap a few pictures, but I
ran into a few unforeseen obstacles
While cutting the lawn I unfortunately ran over
a Yellow Jacket nest and received four stings (I
won’t say where) and was out of commission the
rest of the day.
We ll have pictures in the HHJ next week;
because my grass doesn’t need cutting.
Good Joh At dames. . . .
We want to thank the Perry High AFROTC color
guard and drill team for the fine job they have
been doing at Panther football games. Against
Lamar County they braved the inclimate weather
and put on a fine demonstration despite having
their shoes filled with mud.

Strong Second Half Effort
Erwin’s Panthers
Rap Robins 36-8
Last Thursday night, Sopt
19, the Perry Bth grade hosted
Warner Kobins Bth grade at
Perry High School Stadium
The last year's county
champions looked like a
completely different club of a
week ago when they dropped
their opener to Humble 6-0,
(By the way. Humble lost to
Northside 6-0 this same night
that the Cubs were beating
Warner Hobins )
The Panthers started slowly
having one TD and another
near TD called back because
of penalties “We were just
making too many mental
mistakes out there the first
half,” Coach Dickie Erwin
stated ‘‘Scoring and almost
scoring before they did and
then having them all called
back, was getting our boys
down Then we let them have a
cheapy. Our end got suckcred
in and away they went around
left end. They made the PAT
and the halftime score read 8-
0. Warner Hobins."
The second half was quite
different though. A planned
sleeper play was used, (Note:
It is called sleeper because it's
supposed to catch the op
position sleeping.) And it did.
Sam Kendrick caught a 20
yard pass from Lynn Smith
and ran the final 45 yards for
the score PAT failed, making
the score 8-6. In the samei
quarter John Ridley made a
brilliant 25 yard run to put the
Panthers ahead for good
Clarence Hogan ran the PAT
to make the score 14-8.
At Moody Park
Panther Mites Ground
Eagles 41-0 In Opener
The Panther Mites started
their, season off with a flash
this past Saturday giving the
Centerville Eagles a 41 to 0
thrashing. Solid play by the
entire team was evident from
the initial kickoff to the final
gun.
The defense allowed no first
downs and caused two fum
bles, both recovered by Vinson
Glover. Middle linebacker,
Jeff Jackson, paced the
defense with 10 tackles,
followed by Vinson Glover
with 6, Kyle Jackson and
Cedric Mickles 2 apiece and
Anthony Honeycutt, Robbie
Mullis and A1 Casey I each.
The saying that a game is
lost or won by the job the of
fensive line does was proved
true as Kenneth Terrell, Hoke
Morrow, Joe Vickers, Hervia
Engram, Randy Raffield,
Philip Arnall, and Rodney

During the lirst minutes of
the 4th quarter, the Panthers
wasted little time getting on
the board again
This time it was Clarence
Bogan going from 3 yards out.
John Ridley made a brilliant
run on a lot of extra effort to
set up Bogan's TD. Handy
Lumpkin took a 3 yd pass
trom QB Lynn Smith to make
the score 22-8.
Bogan wasted no time at all
by scoring again, this time on
a 35 yd run up the middle.
PAT tailed. 28-8.
With 12 seconds on the clock
4th down 10 situation at
midfield, the Panthers lined
up to punt only to deceive
Warner Hobins with a fake
punt. Kendrick caught a Smith
pass and ran 50 yds. to score.
Bridges opened gaping holes
lor Chris Duncan, Mike
Harding, Mike Parker and A1
Casey to stroll through.
Several of the long runs were
complimented by the backs
breaking tackles on their own
to gel a little closer to the goal.
Two touchdowns were
called back by penalties but
the Panther Mites were able to
cash in (i TD's and 5 PAT’s.
Chris Duncan had scores of
10, 82, and 42 yards; Mike
Hardy had runs of 22 and 48
yards for tallies and 2 PAT’s;
Mike Parker scored on a 5
yard jaunt with 2 PAT’s and AJ
Casey chalked up 2 PAT’s
while quarterbacking.
(loach Jim Parker said even
though the win was lopsided in
his team’s favor, they still had
plenty of work ahead to
prepare lor future com
petition.
