Ike King Breaks Loose
... In 9-0 Panther Win Friday Night
Over Putnam County
King Leads Perry
To 9-0 Home Win
Perry High's sluggish
running attack came to life
with the return of Elijah King
Friday night as Coach Bob
Morrow’s maroon and gold
Panthers won their home
openW' with a decisive 9-0
triumph over the Putnam
County War Eagles.
Thanks to the brilliant
running of King, who rushed
for 1,126 yards a year ago, the
Panthers' strong ground game
Friday night helped Morrow's
<|. ven completely dominate
the non-region contest despite
the score. Twice the Panthers
had TD's called back via
penalties and twice more they
had drives stall inside the
Eagle 5.
Belter known as Ike, the 160-
pound senior hauled the ball 35
times and finished the night
with 159 net yards. King had
another 45 yards called back
on walkoffs.
Helping out on occasions
were running backs Bob
Brown, James Hillson and
Rickey Humph. Brown hauled
twice for 8, Hillson 5 for 17 and
Rvjmph 1 for 1, as the Panthers
totaled 190 yards rushing for
the evening. Brown and
Hillson also dished out
devesta ting blocks to break
King loose.
Junior QB Lloyd Turner, the
Joe Brown (83) Gets An Eagle
. . . Reid (161 Sacked For Big Loss
region leader in passing,
recorded his poorest game of
the year, but started finding
the mark later by hitting 3 of
his last 4 attempts. Against
Putnam, Lloyd completed 4 of
10, but had 4 passes picked off
that killed several Perry
drives.
Defensively the Panthers
had one of their best nights of
the season as they limited the
Eagles to 33 net yards on the
ground, in 31 rushes, and only
40 yards through the airlanes
(2 of 7). Joe Brown, David
Coley, Mark Jones, Stan
Walley, Ronnie Clarington
and Keith Padgett starred up
front and linebackers Jess
Wright, James Hillson and
Jaru Ash stood out by
collecting 23 stops.
The win squared the Pan
thers’ season mark at 2-2,
while Putnam fell to 1-2.
IKE IS BACK
Playing before the home
folks for the first time this
season the Perry Panthers
won the loss and elected to
receive. Senior Randy Mur
phy returned the short kick to
the Perry 28 where the Pan
thers set up their offense.
Ike King, the man who was
to change the look of the
Panthers before the night was
over, carried on first down
and was thrown for a two-yard
loss trying to go wide. King
tried again on second down
and was stopped for no gain.
Faced with a third-and-12 QB
Turner dropped back to pass
and tossed the ball right into
the hands of Putnam’s Larry
Little, who returned the
pickoff 15 yards to the Perry
15 where Bob Brown knocked
him out of bounds.
Given a golden opportunity
to take the upper hand the War
Eagles failed miserably, as
the fired-up Perry defense
rose to the occasion. FB Ricky
Billups netted nothing on first
down as he ran into 237-pound
David Coley. On the next snap
Eagle QB Frederick Reid was
given the sack treatment by
Perry’s James Hillson, Mark
Jones and Keith Padgett. On
third and 25 tailback Little got
the call and burst threw the
Panther line to the Perry 8. On
fourth down Little got the call
again but got cracked by
Hillson and fumbled; Jaru
Ash came up with it for the
Panthers at the 8.
King still appeared rusty as
the 160-pound TB was dumped
on the Perry 2 on first down.
Two more carries for King
netted 2 and 6 yards, setting
up fourth down and 8. Bob
Brown bombed a 41-yard punt
that was returned to the Perry
39 by Billups, and the Pan
thers were on the defense
again.
Aided by a costly 5-yard
penalty against Perry, the
War Eagles started a march
that had TD written all over it,
but the Panthers bowed their
necks and held the Eagles at
the Perry 3. Ash, Jess Wright,
Coley, Hillson, Jones, Joe
Brown, Randy Murphy made
important stops for Morrow’s
determined Panthers.
Backed up deep in their own
territory the Panthers com
menced grinding it out as King
“did his thing”. After Turner
rolled out for 3, King carried
lour straight times for 6, 15, 2
and 16 yards as the first period
came to a 0-0 close.
At their own 45, at the start
of the second stanza, James
Hillson hauled for 1, followed
by another burst of 12 yards by
King to the Putnam 42. The
drive ended on the next snap
when the interception bug hit
Turner again. The culprit this
time was Terry Dunn, who
made the pickoff at the PC 18.
The War Eagles netted only
5 yards in three snaps so Laq
Lawrence punted to Claude
Lester at the Perry 42. The
speedy senior returned the
pigskin to the Putnam County
39 giving the Panthers great
field position.
Perry, tired of playing
around with the Eagles,
pushed the ball across in just
seven snaps. King started it
with a 9 yard scamper,
followed by 5 more by Hillson
to the 25, King was then nailed
for a 6-yard loss and then was
stopped lor zero on second
down. Turner regained his
passing form on third down by
firing a 31-yard strike to
Randy Murphy, who was
pushed out of bounds on the
PC 6-inch line. Two QB
keepers by Turner lit up the
Perry side of the scoreboard,
lollowed by Bob Brown’s
perfect placement With 5:45
left til intermission, the
Panthers owned a 7-0 lead.
Four plays later, after a 51-
yard Putnam punt, the
Panthers were almost on the
scoreboard again via a 65-
yard return by Lester. But, a
15-yard illegal blocking
penalty nullified Lester’s
beautiful TD run.
Perry handed the ball back
to the Eagles moments later
on a tumble and the Ealonton
based footballers started
moving. After Reid was
sacked on first down by Joe
Brown and Ronnie Clarington,
the rangy 6-2 QB lofted a 36-
yard strike to big Laq
Lawrence lor a first down at
the Perry 16. Lester made a
saving tackle lor the Pan
thers.
Keid tried to go to the well
again but had the toss picked
off by the ever present Lester
at the Perry 12 and the 135-
pound senior ran it back to the
PC 46 before being pulled
down from behind.
Perry drove to the Putnam
16 and just missed another TD
when Turner’s end zone pass
was too low for Murphy to
handle. Tinner's next attempt
was hijacked again, killing
another Panther drive. The
half ended on the interception
runback to the Putnam 9.
NO MORE TD’S
The third quarter proved to
be more frustration for the
Panthers as another TD at
tempt fell short. After holding
the Eagles to nothing on three
downs (great defensive plays
by Stan Walley, Jones and
Coley), the Panthers took over
at the PC 45 via another fine
Lester runback.
King, Bob Brown and
Hillson carried on the ground
as the Perryans marched to
the PC 21, where adversity
struck again. Two 15-yard
penalties wiped out the TD
chance so Bob Brown punted
to the PC 26.
The Perry defense, still
pretending it was a brick wall,
forced the Eagles to punt back
three down later and the
Panthers took over on their
own 46,
King hauled twice for 12 and
Hillson two times for 7 to the
PC 35 as the third period
ended with the Panthers still
claiming a 7-0 advantage.
With only a quarter to play
the Perryans started off the
final quarter at the Putnam
35, but had to give up the ball
on downs as another march
died.
Thanks to outstanding
coverage by DB’s Randy
Murphy, Duane Murphy,
Johnny McCarty and Eddie
Harmon, three straight
Eagles passes missed their
marks and the Panthers were
in possession again at their
own 22 after a long Lawrence
punt.
King exploded for 23 yards
to the 45, but two plays later
another Turner pass was
stolen at the Putnam 26. The
Eagles again failed to move
the chains and a shanked
Lawrence punt gave the
Panthers the ball at the
Putnam 39.
Rickey Rumph picked up 1
on a counter, followed by a 27-
yard scamper by King (great
block by Hillson) to the
Putnam 16. Three straight
penalties on the Panthers (5,
15, and 15 more) backed the
Panthers back into their own
territory with second down
and a mile to go.
King carried twice for 20
and Hillson once for 4 and on
fourth down Bob Brown’s 46-
yard fieldgoal fell short. A
snap later the Panthers had
the ball back on a Reid
fumble. Hillson came up with
it on the PC 9.
With a chance to put icing on
the cake the Panthers started
goalward. King slashed for 4
to the PC 5, but on second and
third downs King got dumped
lor 2 and 3 yard losses setting
up lourth down and goal.
Turner dropped back, spotted
R. Murphy open, and drilled a
7-yarder to the senior
receiver, who was dropped
immediately. Putnam took
over on their own 3 with just 55
seconds left.
QB Reid rolled out and ran
lor 6on first down, but messed
up on down two. Reid’s pitch
out to TB R.C. Griffen got
away and rolled into the Eagle

the Eagles 44 as the game
ended.

For First Win
Cubs Clobber
Warriors 30-8
Last Thursday, the 7th
grade Panther Cubs
registered their first win of the
season by soundly defeating
the Warriors from Warner
Robins Jr. High 30-8.
The Warriors started the
game off by running the
kickoff back all the way for a
touchdown and converting the
extra point for a 8-0 lead. This
stunned but didn't shake the
Panther Cubs. After the
Warrior kickoff, it took the
Cubs only two plays to tie the
game up. Henry Jackson, the
Cubs’ 195 lb. fullback, skirted
the left end 52 yds,, and the
touchdown. QB Arthur Harris
ran around right end for the

Warriors 8, Cubs 8. The
quarter ended with the score
tied.
In the second quarter, the
Cubs picked up momentum as
their defense really did the job
as Marvin Jones, Dan Wright,
a-ud Jimmy Hickey all
recovered fumbles. Two of the
recoveries resulted in touch
downs as FB Henry Jackson
ran 28 yds. for a TD with QB
Arthur Harris throwing to HB
Marvin Jones for the extra
point which upped the score to
16-8 in favor of the Cubs. The
other touchdown came when
HB Marvin Jones threw to
End Louis Wallace for 65 yds.

and a TD. The extra point
attempt failed, and as the half
came to an end, the Cubs were
leading 22-t).
The third quarter saw the
Cubs defense really stiffened'
up as they shut out the
Warriors in the second half:
The Cubs scored twice in the
second half only to have a 64
yd, TD scamper by FB Henry
Jackson called back for of
fensive holding. The Cubs
other score came after LB
Dean Walker made a fine
interception and ran it for
some 30 yds. down to the
Warriors’ 5 yd, line. From
there, QB Arthur Harris!
busted the right side for the
Cubs’ final TD. Harris again
connected with HB Marvin
Jones for the extra point. LB
Dean Walker and DHB Louis
Wallace stopped any thoughts
the Warriors had of crossing
the goal line in the fourth
quarter as Walker recovered a
fumble and Wallace in
tercepted a pass.
Coaches Dan Shelton and
James Cobb were well pleasc*d
with their teams’ per
formance. Coach Shelton,
stated that the defense really
did a good job. He had high
praise for DE Charlie Culler
and Ben Holmes, DT Henry
Jackson and Marvin Jones.
DG Jimmy Hickey and Tim
King, LB Dean Walker and
Stanley Bass, DHB Louis
Wallace, Arthur Harris and
Dan Wright. On Offense,
also did a fine job. I don’t think
we made but 3 mistakes the
entire game. Our Offensive
team is composed of Ends
Charlie Culler and Louis
Wallace, Tackles Allen Purser
and Ben Holmes, Guards
Kenny Malone, Keith Smith,
Mark Hush, Centers Tony
Carter and Gef Ganey, QB
Arthur Harris, FB Henry
Jackson, HB’s Dean Walker
and Marvin Jones. Coach
Shelton said he would like to
express his appreciation to all
the many fans who came and
supported their team so well.
We sincerely hope they will
