This “infant” was given mouth-to-mouth resuscitation by Sandra Workman
Monday morning in practice for graduation from the CPR director’s course at
Perry-Houston County Hospital. The course was under the auspices of the
American Heart Association.

Perry-Houston County
Hospital Monday afternoon
offered Cardio-Pulmonary
Resuscitation (CPR) training
for a large group of
policemen, firemen, and in
terested individuals. The
Georgia Heart Association,
Inc., provided manuals for the
training that may someday
save lives.
The training consisted of: A
short history of CPR, a film, a
slide lecture, demonstration of
CPR techniques on three
manikins, a question and
answer period, a written
examination, and a practical
examination.
Included in the instructor’s
manual is a brief on Georgia
Law 84-930, the “Georgia Good
Samaritan Law’’, which
relieves liability from civil
suit of any persons (including
physicians) who perform
emergency care at the scene
of an accident...without
making a charge. The act was
passed in 1962.
Three prestigious
organizations - The American
Heart Association, The
American National Red Cross,
The Industrial Medical
Association - along with the
U.S. Public Health Service,
endorse the benefit of well
applied CPR. They say:
‘‘External cardiac
resuscitation is a proved and
accepted life-saving technique
and should be applied as an
emergency procedure by
PROPERLY TRAINED in
dividuals of the medical,
dental, nursing and allied
health professions and of
rescue squads.”
They caution, however, that
“the successful application of
closed-chest cardiopulmonary
resuscitation depends upon
thorough and careful training.
Closed-chest CPR should only
be employed by individuals
who have been properly in
structed.”
Reported injuries due to
untrained individuals ap
plying CPR have included:
damage to the heart and liver,
internal bleeding, multiple rib
fractures, and puncture of the
lungs.
