The Rat Problem
There are apparently some wharf
rats in some of the sewers in Perry.
At least three cases of these rats
making their way into the commodes
in Perry homes have been reported
and the incidents have caused some
alarm among our citizens.
It is a “ratty” problem, to say the
least, but we are happy to inform the
citizens of Perry the City officials
along with state and county health
officers, are working around the clock
on this problem and should have it
cleared up in the near future. There is
really no need for alarm because the

the Commission needs to find a better

Tuesday night the Commission had
an opportunity to put Beckham’s idea
into effect. He had suggested letting

The Slanted Side
By Joe Hiett W*
Y’all have heard about ole Roy
Glenn Miller, a friend of mine? No.
Well, here goes. Roy Glenn Miller
lives out a ways from town, and is
known as somewhat of a cat fancier.
But he’s kinda gullible. Seems some
nogood skunk unloaded an alley cat
on him the other day.
As alley cats usually do, this one
chewed up everything in sight - an end
of the sofa, one of Roy’s best shirts,
and the newspaper, every day. Well,
ole Roy had been meaning to get rid of
Tom for several days but kept putting
it off for one reason or another.
Ole Roy Glenn Miller is also a lover
of Western clothes, and the other day
he went all the way to Texas on
vacation, acquiring an SBO.OO pair of
cowboy boots while in Fort Worth.
Well, Hoy Glenn Miller brought his
boots home and retired for the night,
making a fatal mistake. He left his SBO
boots at the foot of the bed, instead of
putting them in the closet.
Sure enough, Tom got a hold of
them boots chawing them into little
bits, a scattering them all over that
house. Infuriated, Roy Glenn Miller
chased ole Tom out of the house. A
minute or two later, Roy’s wife drove
up. Roy proceeded to lay things on the
line.
Just then, Tom poked his furry,
smirking head around the corner,
whereupon Roy Glenn Miller’s wife
sang out, “Parden me, Roy, is that
the cat that chewed the new shoes?”

It is more than just possible that
Monroe and the “Mean Green” will
meet at season’s end, if a lot of ifs

Massive Federal

“People no longer believe that
massive federal spending will
necessarily solve all social ills in

perhaps it would. But it did not.
People got their hopes up. and then
their hopes were dashed, when
program after program costing

I’m sure glad to see the Macon-Bibb
County Hospital Authority decide to
take another look at the recent
decision to close the Medical Center’s
school of nursing in two years. The
Authority announced on July 31 that it
planned to close the three year
“diploma” nursing school after 73
years of operation. Then a Mercer
University official said the
Authority’s plan would harm plans
for a medical school at Mercer, and
pyschologically harm a chamber of
commerce effort to raise two million
dollars for the Mercer project.
The announcement of recon
sideration is certainly pleasing.
Hospitals around the Middle Georgia
area frequently “shoplift” the nur
sing school’s graduates. Without the
Medical Center school, a serious
shortage of practical nurses would
undoubtedly develop in this area. I
would even be willing to have the
state fund the school, if necessary, to
keep it open. But I can see the school’s
point that they shouldn’t have to in
vest three years in a student, only to
see them work somewhere else.

“There’s been a lotta water, under the bridge
between Perry and Warner Robins,’’ the
politician told me. He continued, “There’s been a
lotta bad blood over the years between folks in
Warner Robins and Perry; there ain’t no doubt
about that.” —The strong and old line-connected
Warner Robins politician further told me, “It’s
time for all of us in Warner Robins and all of you
in Perry to settle our differences and call off this
feud that’s been going on for more years than you
been in Perry, and me ahd the people of Warner
Robins are ready to do it and I believe the people
of Perry are ready for us all to get along and let's
start talking about the future of Houston County
and not the split in the county and not the moving
of the county seat.”
Those words were spoken to me by a leader and
politician in Warner Robins this week. He was
sincere in what he said. He wants to see a mend in
the open wound that has separated Perry and
Warner Robins for so many years and I believe he
was sincere in what he told me. 0
The most recent controversies between Perry
and Warner Robins over moving the county seat
and the court case filed here to seek out a legal
answer to conducting county business outside the
county seat may all be for the best. I think it has
shown us all that there is a lot more for Houston
County to gain by us all working in a united effort
than it is by us going in different and crossed-Up
directions.
Look. We all know the county seat is not going to
be moved and we know Houston County is not
going to be split into two separate counties. It just
isn’t in the cards for either of these things to
happen and to continue to air these controversies
in the news media here in Perry and in Warner
Robins is only creating further gap in the lines of
communication between Perry and Warner
Robins.
I am of the fifm opinion that some steps willAe
taken in the near future by political and business
leaders in both Warner Robins and Perry to
initiate an open line of communication about the
problems we now face and the controversies wfii
have been through in the past. Such a move will be
a step in the right direction so that at some point
down the long and dubious road facing us all we
will be able to see clearly where we are going. By
all of us in Houston County working together, we
can expect a better chance of landing new
business, industry and citizens in the months an{l
years ahead. On the other hand, constant con
troversy in the county sticks out like a sore thumb
to prospective new business and citizens.
wants to move into a community that is embroiled

I personally appeal here and now to the
political, business and civic leaders of the county
to take steps now to begin a new era in Houston
County an era of cooperation and resppt
between factions in southern and northern

DOC CARPENTER IS
But lay up for yourselves
treasures in heaven.
-Matt. 6:20
A little boy back in the hills
of North Carolina told his
friends he was going to be a
doctor. They laughed at him,
saying it took brains and
money to be a doctor. Yet he
held steadfastly to his am
bition. He took one of his
father’s cows to the county
seat where there was a high
school and literally “milked”
his way through school.
He got a scholarship to
Johns Hopkins University and
graduated in medicine.
Turning down a lucrative
practice offered in New York,
he returned to the North
Carolina hills where he knew
how badly he was needed.
The name of “Old Doc
Carpenter” became, through
50 years of faithful practice, a
legend in the county. He'was
not only the people’s doctor,

One day the old doctor Was
found slumped over his rpll

such a funeral; people catne

their home-grown flowers to

to bring a marker for the

foreseen the need. He ran
down and took off the sign
which swung from the ceiling
of the drugstore porch It
read: “Dr. Carpenter”, fa it
had a red stamped hand

the sign at the head of the
