Hornet Field Goal
Sinks Raiders 15-14
An opportunistic band of
Westfield Hornets, seizing
upon a chance given them by
Ml Ravenwood Red Raiders,
Friday night came from
behind with 18 seconds left on
a 25 yard field goal by Matt
Mellette to edge the Raiders
15-14 at the Hornets Nest and
remain undefeated and untied
after five games.
Westfield got its first 12
points courtesy George
Richerson. The 150 pound
sophomore caught two scoring
tosses from Tom Malone, an
82 yard bomb and a 15 yard
strike. The huge Red Raider
defensive forward wall par
tially stymied the Hornet
rushing attack, but Westfield
did manage 162 yards on the
ground, to go with 121 yards
through the airlanes.
The Red Radiers ran over,
around, and through Westfield
for 224 yards on 54 carries.
Three backs punished the
j|)rnets - Ken Stanaland, 85
yards; Jamie Joiner, 62
yards; and Maurice Glass, 76
yards. But the highpowered
aerial game of the men in red
was shut down as the Raiders

Matt Mellette went over the
100-yard mark for the second
game in a row for Westfield,
earning 102 yards on 26
carries, far below his six yard
average. Ken Simpson, Edwin
Ellis, and Phil Gentry led the
“Mean Green” defense, which
bent before the Red Raider
attack, but did not break.
Simpson injured a knee in the
closing seconds of the game,
and may not play this
weekend.
Matt Mellette and Stan Wills
served as co-captains for
Westfield, with Westfield
winning the toss and electing
to receive. Junior tailback
flanker David Bryant
returned the kick-off to his
own 42, where Westfield set up
offensive shop.
The Hornets immediately
began a drive upfield against
the much bigger Red Raiders.
Mellette gained four, a
penalty against Ravenwood
gained five, and Matt got four
more to give the Hornets a
first down on the Raider 46.
An unsportsmanlike con
duct call against the Red
Raiders gave Westfield 15
more yards, but the angry
Raiders stopped the Hornet
infantry and took over on their
own 13 yard line with 6;52 left
in the first period.
The Raiders ground out two
first downs on the ground, but
the first of four fumbles
stopped their advance.
Although Jamie Joiner
recovered the sloppy pitch
out, Jimmy Anderson was
forced to punt upfield to the
Hornet 34 with 3:25 remaining
in the opening quarter.
Matt Mellette broke three
tackles enroute to a seventeen
yard gain on second down, but
a questionable pair of off
setting penalties erased the
play. Three plays later, with
Ravenwood throwing the
football, David Bryant raced
deep with the intended
receiver and hauled in an
interception on the Hornet 40.
The second quarter began
one minute later, with
Ravenwood fumbling again
(and recovering its own
fumble again). The miscue
was caused by a hard hit by
nose guard Edwin Ellis.
SAVED BY A FUMBLE...
The Radiers got scoring
notions, even from their own
19, with Maurice Glass
rambling 21 yards upfield to
the Ravenwood 45. Ken
Stanaland followed up by
racing through a gaping hole
to the Hornet 38, a 17 yard
gain. A pass interference call
on Westfield got the Raiders
another chain-move at the
Hornet 22.
But on first and ten,
Maurice Glass coughed up the
football after being hit hard on
the Hornet 18. Ken Simpson
fell on the bouncing pigskin,
giving Westfield’s offense a
chance. A first down pass play
fell incomplete.
BOMB HITS RAIDERS
On second down at the 18,
George Richerson headed
straight upfield on a fly pat
tern, and Tom Malone
delivered the ball perfectly to
George, who didn't even break
stride. Richerson swerved to
the left side and out raced all
pursuers into the waiting end
zone, completing an 82 yard
touchdown play, with 9:33 left
before intermission. Westfield
led 6-0.
The PAT Was a mess, in
several ways. Matt Mellette
toed the ball through the
uprights, and a ref signalled
good. But another threw a
flag, and trotted over to talk
with the Hornets. Plainly he
signalled that Westfield had
refused the penalty.
The farce wasn’t over,
however, as in seconds
another man in a striped shirt
signalled offsetting penalties.
So the PAT had to be tried
again. This time it was
blocked, costing the Hornets a
point.
HAIDERS ON THE
MARCH .and a TIE
The Meigs “Wild Bunch”
got the kick-off and ran right
at the heart of the “Green”,
eating up 59 yards in 15 plays.
Aggressive running by
Maurice Glass, and Ken
Stanaland keyed the drive.
Stanaland scored from six
inches out with 5:00 showing
before halftime. The PAT kick
was off to the left, but the
score was lied 6-6.
The rough and tumble style
of play that Ravenwood shows
got them in hot water on
succeeding plays, as Westfield
drove 80 yards for a score,
helped out by three 15-yarders
marched off against the Red
Raiders lor roughness. David
Bryant ignited things with a
nine yard gain on a naked
reverse good to the Hornet 29.
A hitting late penalty got
Westfield a first down at the
Hornet 48.
GEORGE STRIKES
AGAIN
A five yard run by Matt
Mellette and another 15 yard
markoff moved the ball to the
Red Raider 35, with 4:21
showing before intermission.
A minute later a roughing the
passer call continued the
Hornet advance, to the Raider
20. Two rushing attempts
moved the pigskin to the 15.
On third and five, Tom
Malone dropped back
and spotted George Richerson
breaking over the goal line on
a crossing pattern. Two
seconds later the ball had been
delivered to Richerson via the
aerial route. So with 1:56 to go
before the half, Westfield led
12-6. The PAT was again
blocked.

Malone Follows Tolleson Block
.... For Yardage In Final Drive
started to shine. After the
Raiders made a first down to
their own 40, on the next four
plays they lost a total of
fourteen yards. George
Richerson started things off
for Westfield by belting
Raider back Maurice Glass.
Then Mayo Sexton savagely
threw to the ground both a
blocker and ballcarrier. A
play later, Raider QB Jimmy
Anderson was sacked by Mayo
Sexton and Edwin Ellis, losing
13 yards. Stan Wills then
blocked an Anderson pass.
But Westfield couldn’t
move, being stoppl'd by an
interception on the Raider 17
yard line. Two more penalties
stopped the Big Red Machine,
and they punted upheld, with
5:17 left in the third period.
Three plays later Westfield’s
George Richerson punted
dead on the Raider five yard
line.
95 YARD DRIVE
The 95 yards facing the
Raiders didn't awe them, as
they proceeded to unveil an 18
play drive that resulted in a
touchdown. Ken Stanaland
and Jamie Joiner between
them picked up 60 yards of the
time-consuming drive, which
ate up 6:55 off the third and
fourth quarter clock QB
Anderson scored from one
yard out with 9:11 left in the
contest, tying the score 12-12.
The Raiders trotted out for a
PAT kick, seemingly, but
holder Anderson sprang up
and passed to a wide-open
Jamie Joiner, Ravenwood
going ahead 14-12.
Westfield got the kick-off
and used up three precious
minutes in a drive that ended
in a fumble on the Raider 30
with 6:34 left. A “gift”
reception by David Bryant
accounted for 24 yards in the
drive.
But the Hornets got a second
chance with 4:51 left on an 11-
yard return of a punt by
Bryant to the Haider 39. Matt
Mellette broke to the
Ravenwood 27, but fumbled a
play later with 4:18
remaining, as Westfield hopes
sank.
Two plays later Ravenwood
had a third and two on their
own 32. But Phil Gentry
stopped Maurice Glass for a
yard loss and Ravenwood
went back to punt, with 2:31

The snap from center went
awry and punter Jimmy
Anderson, under a hard rush,
shanked the punt from his own
15 to the Raider 30, where
George Richerson returned to
the 25, with 2:21 left to play.
PANDEMONIUM REIGNS
Hornet QB Tom Malone kept
to the Radier 20, then Mellette
gained three and one on two
carries. Faced with fourth
down and a yard to go for a
first down, the Hornets con
templated a field goal try of
about 35 yards with 1:14 left.
But then the coaches decided
to try to get the first down, and
Tom Malone kept to the 15,
and the precious chain-mover.
Mellette gained three yards
to the 12 around the right side,
then got four yards to the
Raider eight yard line,
bringing up third and three
with twenty two seconds left to
play Matt Mellette then sent
the crowd into a frenzy by
calmly booting a 25 yard field
goal to put Westfield ahead 15-
14 with 0:18 left. The same line
which had been porous on the
two previous kicks (PAT’s),
stood firm as a rock, holding
out (he big Raiders.

PUTTING
To be able to putt consistently you must hit the
putt solid at all times.
The key to a solidly hit putt is to keep the head
steady, and take the putter away from the ball low
to the ground with a smooth stroke.
Keeping your left wrist firm will help keep the
putter blade square.
HLCC HAPPENINGS
The winner of our dogfight held last Saturday
was Wilson Moody with a score of plus-2.
The monthly meeting of the Men’s Golf
Association voted to set up a hole-in-one club. It is
a progressive club with members paying only one
(1) dollar each month to stay current. The first
hole-in-one gets the jackpot. Ladies are also in
vited to join in on this club.
The Raiders got the kickoff
but could do nothing as the
horn sounded, A flood of
humanity engulfed the playing
field, as joyous Westfield fans
embraced their Hornets, who
had pulled out a come from
behind triumph.
