When the Moore Lumber
Company ol Perry was pur
chased by the partners in 1927,
its name was changed to
Tolleson Lumber and .1
Meade Tolleson became the
owner Buddy Tolleson joined
his late lather in the lumber
business and lived in Ocilla
eight years while managing
the Tolleson plant in Fit
zgerald,
Buddy Tolleson returned to
Perry in 1941 after his father’s
death to manage the business
in Perry. He is married to
the lormer Mary Ann Nunn,
and they have three
daughters.
Mel S Tolleson. Buddy’s
brother, is associated with
Tolleson Lumber. He joined
the company after graduating
Irom the University of
Georgia and a lour of duty in
the Army. Mel’s wife is the
lormer Sandra Smission of
Fort Valley They have a son
and a daughter.
From its beginning,
Tolleson Lumber has been a
Buddy Tolleson
leader in the South in the
manufacture ol Southern
Yellow pine lumber. It has
expanded in recent years to
Fitzgerald, Georgia, and
Union City, Georgia, diver
sifying into the wood
preserving business and into
l he manufacture of hardwood
lumber serving the furniture
industry. Its bandmill in
Ferry is considered one of the
most modern in the South.
The Fitzgerald plant
specializes in long leaf pine.
The Hardwood plant built
near the original plant in 19(18
has already doubled its
capacity. It is a model of ef
ficiency in both production

output of the new plant is 40 ,
percent red oak with the \
balance comprising white oak, /
poplar, gum, maple, hickory, i
pecan, ash, tupelo or while (
gum, mulberry and walnut. )
The log inventory on the V
spacious yard is more than I
ample and is replenished i
everyday. There is a sprinkler (
system to keep wood cells j
alive in the lumber on the I
yard. There is an automatic I
lumber stacker which does '
live limes the work of manual
labor per hour.
The tree level mill building
is a model of wood con
struction with laminated
beams and trusses permitting j
a main work floor free of posts
and other obstructions. The
exterior is cypress inverted
batten siding and the
millroom floor is of extra
heavy reinforced concrete.
The plant equipment is on the I
ground level. The mill room
occupies the second lloor and
the tiling room, the third floor. |
