Making It Big
In Record Charts
Perry has another potential
hit recording star now making
the charts on a nationwide
basis. Leon Collins, formerly
of Perry, making records on
the Elf label, is hitting it big in
the Boston and Washington,
D.C., areas with a tuneful duo
of “1 Just Wanna Say 1 Love
You” and “Knowing I Love
You”.

tgan at the age of five, when
he sang in school and church
choirs. Singers Nat King Cole
and Johnny Mathis have
strongly influenced the Collins
career. Leon continued to sing
while in high school.
By the mid-sixties, Leon
Collins had become a front
man and sang lead vocals with
the Vanguards and the Am
bitions. Eventually he went on
his own, and performed at
Georgia Southwestern, Fort
Perry Nursing Home

(unfilled Hayride on a recent
Saturday afternoon.
The group left the home at 6
P.M. and rode out Highway
341 to the home of Mrs, James
White who is the activity
director at the home. Ice
cream was served and the
return trip was made around 8
P.M.

Later in the sixties, Collins
did a short military stand and
moved to Boston,
Massachusetts, upon his
return from service. A short
while later, he recorded his
first two songs, “Somebody
Help Me” and “Sad Day
Tonight”, which enjoyed
moderate success.
On his new recording, Leon
has excellent backing: on
drums - Keith Copeland
(Stevie Wonder’s ex
drummer); and Garland
Taylor, musical director with
Gladys Knight and the Pips,
Leon’s manager is Herb
Shriber, who has more than 35
years experience in the music
industry.
Leon is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Amos Collins of Perry,
owners of Collins Upholstery.
We would like to thank Mr.
Rily Young for lending us a
tractor, Mr. Charles
Culpepper for his farm wagon
and Mr. James Fennell for the
hay lhat made this trip
possible.

A call was received on Sept.
22 to a double-wide mobile
home on the Macon County
line. Complete loss.
