Station of Perry, was the
speaker at the October
meeting of the Sgt, Clinton C.
Duncan chapter of the United
Daughters of the Confederacy.
The meeting was held Wed
nesday, Oct. 2, at the home of

This week, October 6
through 12, is Fire Prevention
Week all over the United
States. Saturday, October 12,
the Hayneville-Grovania Fire
Department will host their fire
demonstration. Supper will
begin being served at 5:00

Lieutenant Charles W. Read,
hero of the Confederate
States’ Navy. With no interest
in setting academic records,
Ll Read graduated at the foot
of his class at the U S. Naval
Academy in Annapolis, Md.,
in 1860 when he was 20 years
old. Nicknamed "Savez” by
his classmates, one of whom
said of him; “Read had
common sense, sublime
courage, great originality and
beginning at 5:00 P.M. also
with all proceeds going to the
fire department. Anyone
wishing to bake a cake,
cookies, or candy for donation
and have not been contacted,
please call one of the
firemen’s wives or 987-2454.
This week has been a week
of revival and celebration at
the First Baptist Church of
llayneville. The church is
celebrating 150 years of
service for God. The revival
evangelist is Andy Hornbaker
from Englewood, Colorado
and everyone is invited to
attend services beginning at
7:30 P.M. through Friday,
October 11.
We want to wish Johnny and
Theresa Singletary and girls
all the luck in the world as
they go to make their new
home in Moultrie. We will
miss you and will look forward
to seeing you from time to
lime.

The September meeting of
Commodore Perry Society
Children of the American
Revolution was held at the
home of Mrs. Lewis B. Smyth.
The meeting was called to
order by the new president,
Billy Jerles. The Pledge of
Allegiance was led by Billy,
the C A R. creed was led by
Clare Smyth and the C A R.
song was sung with Clare at
the piano. The invocation was
given by Nancy Geiger,
chaplain.
The local C A R, newspaper,
“The Blinker” was given out
by the new editor, Ellen
Bailey. Plans for the coming
year were discussed with Mrs.
Jerry Langston of trips,

presided over by Mrs. A.L
Downs, president, who an
nounced that she would attend
the Georgia Division U.D.C.
annual convention Oct. 6-9 at
Callaway Gardens.
The chapter voted to par
ticipate in the Flea Market of
the Club Council on Nov. 21-22
and also to contribute to the
DeMolay Calendar for 1973.
The hostesses served a
dessert course to the seven
teen present.
speakers and other interesting
ideas for the year’s programs.
Members were reminded to
bring used clothes, stamps
and soup labels to the next
meeting for the mountain
schools sponsored by the
C A R. and D.A.R.
The program was presented
by Clare Smyth on National
Heritage, a new committee on
the national level. The theme
was “Symbols of Patriotism”
emphasizing “Your Govern
ment, Your Responsibility”.
New officers for the 74-75
year were installed by Clare
Smyth. They are as follows:

Jennifer McQuaig, vice
present, Ellen Bailey,
recording secretary; Cindy
Hickson, chaplain; Terri
Blood worth, corresponding
secretary; Lauri Culpepper,
historian.
A very handsome book,
“The Beauty of America”,
was presented to Ellen Bailey,
the outgoing president of
Commodore Perry. Billy
Jerles gave the benediction
and adjourned the meeting. A
delightful supper was enjoyed
by all following the meeting.
