Contract Finally Awarded
Henderson To Get
County Building
That long-awaited multi
purpose county building
scheduled for construction in
the South Houston community
of Henderson took a giant step
closer to being reality
Tuesday morning when the
Houston County Commission
opened formal bids. Awarded
the contract for the 30 x 50
building was Bogue, Ltd., with
a bid of $15,903.20.
Others bidding were:
Bowles Glass Shop of Perry,
J.L. Mimbs Construction, and
Bozeman Construction of
Macon. After opening all bids,
commissioner Alton Tucker

unanimous.
The building will house the
precinct’s voting machine and
will serve as area Civil
Defense headquarters. It will
also house the county fire
truck stationed in Henderson.
It will be constructed of 26
gauge steel and will have
offices prefinished. A
restroom is included in the bid
price, as are two overhead
opening doors.
The building had been
promised to Henderson
residents for many months,
and came after a formal
request to “move out” on bid
taking was made by a group of
about 60 Henderson residents,
who appeared enmass at a
recent County Commission
meeting in Perry.
The Bogue bid estimated
start of construction within
two weeks and completion
within five to six weeks time.
The building will have a four
inch concrete slab floor and
suspended ceiling, with
flourescent lighting.
In another bids opening, the
commissioners bought a pair
of pickups and a one-ton truck
cab and chassis. The pickups
are for new Solid Waste

Os Middle-Georgia
Several people have been asking recently just what the Middle-Georgia
Association of Union Labor is, and what's behind it.
In the past few years the reputation and status of organized labor in
this area has been on the downgrade. The cause or causes can't be pinned
down to any one thing, but it seems to be a reflection of a trend which is
on the rise across the country.
F'or some time now, a group of concerned members of some of the locals
in Middle Georgia have become more and more upset about this situation and
have been casting about for a means to reverse the picture. When some of
them were contacted in August about sponsoring an advertisement to salute
labor on its day an idea was born; and shortly thereafter the Middle-Georgia
Association of Union Labor was formed.
Through a series of ads which are actually stories of the part unions
have played in the past to improve the standard of living of all American
workingmen, and a continuing informational series which will make the pub
lic more aware of Organized labor's role in their everyday life; the Asso
ciation's goal is to improve the image which the public has of us. These
ads are being accompanied by a series of spot announcements on Radio WDEN.
In the short time since the program was launched many favorable com
ments have been received from business, civic and political leaders of the
community, but there is much to be done.
