Entering their Bth year as a
STAR sponsor, the Perry Area
Chamber of Commerce, with
Harold J. Jennings, President,
will ‘ again be the official
sponsor of the Student
Teacher Achievement
Recognition (STAR) Program
in the Perry High & Westfield
High school systems, it was
announced by Derward W
Terry, Industrial & Com
mercial Mgr, Gas Light Co. of
Columbus and Third District
STAR Chairman
Originated by the Georgia
Chamber of Commerce, STAR
is entering its 17th year of
recognizing and promoting
academic achievement,
honoring the teaching
profession, and explaining the
merits of the free enterprise
system
Awards and honors to be
received by the 1975 STAR
Students and STAR Teachers
were outlined by Claude
Hooker, President, First
National Hank & Trust
Company, Augusta, and
Chairman, Georgia Cham
tier's Education Council.
Tlfe 1975 Slate STAR
Student will be awarded a trip
to South America by the
Savings & Loan Associations
through the Georgia Savings &
Loan la-ague, SSOO cash from
Atlanta Gas light Company,
and the STAR Statuette
presented by the Georgia
Chamber of Commerce.
A SSOO scholarship from
Puritan Chemical Company
and the ALF Statuette
presented by A.L. Feldman,
Allapla, will be the top awards
presppled to the State STAR
Teacher
T(*e lirsl runner-up to Ihe
Slate i( STAH Student (chosen
Irorn the district winners) will
he given a SSOO scholarship
presented by Atlantic Steel
Company, while the first
runner-up STAR Teacher will
he the recipient of a SSOO

40 Years
The October meeting of the
Wednesday Afternoon Hook
Club was held on the Kith at
the home ol Mrs DM. Ryle
with Mrs (Ml Tucker as co
hostess
Mrs Cohen Walker,
president, presided over the
business session. She called
attention to the honor shown
one of the members, Mrs.
W K Whipple, by her children
in establishing the Whipple
Hook Fluid at the Library in
honor ol Mr and Mrs.
Whipple Mrs Walker also
presented the lust of a series
of Rule known tacts about
Ch,filter Members of the club
buying tins 40th anniversary
yew, Mrs. T D Maston, Sr .
was honored in this way
A decision was made to set
the time of meetings for the
next lour months at AOO
rather than 8:30.
Mrs M M Dean introduced
the program which included a
timely review of "All The
President's Men" by Carl
Bernstein and Hob Woodward
given by Mrs FM. Greene,
Jr This book has been called
"the greatest and most
powerful single indictment of
a political regime ever to be
leveled in modern times."
Mrs Hugh Lawson gave an
appealing review of Merle
Miller's "Plain Speaking", an
oral biography of Harry S.
Truman. This book is uniquely
important as political history
hut irresistibly warm and
human, making Harry S
Truman come magically alive
in his own words and those
closest to him, recreating a
splendid man and the historic
times he lived through and so
often helped to mold
Delicious refreshments
were served by the hostesses
during the social hour
carrying out the ruby colors of
the 401 h anniversary stone

throughout the State.
The Perry Area Chamber of
Commerce as local STAR
Sponsor will administer the
System Student and Teacher’s
trip to the District STAR
Meeting and provide an escort
lor the System Student and
Teacher to attend the State
STAR Banquet in Atlanta,
April 17, 1975, at the Marriott
Motor Hotel.
To qualify to become a
STAR Student, a student must
be unmarried, a legally
enrolled senior all year in a
public or private high school
in Georgia accredited by the
Georgia Accrediting Com
mission or Southern
Association of Colleges and
Schools, and have a scholastic
average for the first semester
or first quarter of the senior
year in the upper 10 percent of
his or her class.
Students must have taken
the College Board Scholastic
Aptitude Test (SAT) either on
November 2, 1974, or
December 7, 1974. Students’
SAT scores for each part of the
SAT must be equivalent to the
latest available national
average.
STAR Teachers are selected
by the STAR Students on the
basis of their contributions to
the students’ academic
achievement. STAR Teachers
share the recognition ac
corded the STAR Students.

Day Care Party
Houston Day Care Center
held its Halloween Carnival
Saturday, October 12, at the
Houston Recreation Center. It
was quite a successful event
which provided lots of fun and
goodies for everyone. Ac
tivities were penny pitch, ring
a-bottle, fortune telling,
music, cake drawing, a
variety of goodies and a
bargain corner. The proceeds
will be applied to the Center

matching fund of a Title IV A
Grant.
We appreciate the
cooperation and thank the
Recreation Center, I
Williamson Grocery, Citgo
Service Station, Piggly
Wiggly, Grant City, Price Rite
Grocery and each individual
who has given support toward
our goal.

Griffin.
