V' NOOK if
■Y MILDRED j. WARREN
This week I had such a nice note
from Carol (Mrs. Larry) Matthews of
Atwater, California. Last week we
had a visitor in The Cook’s Nook from
New York, so you see we do get
around!
(Larry’s parents are Mary Ellen
and Jimmy Abrams of Perry. He is
the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. A.W.
Cristie, who also live in Perry.) Larry
is a Major in the Air Force, and is
stationed at Castle AFB near At
water, California. Carol says they
look forward to the Houston Home
Journal each week.
She sent me some “California”
recipes for our Cook’s Nook, and I
was delighted to have these. One is for
a Zucchini Bread, and the other two
are salads. Carol says these are a bit
different from the salads she’s had
%fore, but are so good that she
wishes to share these with us. Carol, it
was so good to have your note, and
I’m glad you are enjoying my cook
book. It’s such fun to have you as our
‘‘Guest Editor” for the week. We are
looking forward to seeing you and
Larry when you are in Perry again.

RETURN JOURNEY, by
R.F. Uelderfield. is available
at the Ferry-Houston County
Library.
A few weeks ago I reviewed
The Avenue by Delderfield
and gave it a rather negative
review. 1 saw Margaret
Hamilton at a meeting and she
said I should read more of his
works before giving up on him
so 1 have read more and she
was right. I tried one of his
books and never got past the
first chapter so I began to
think my first opinion was
right, but I decided to give him
At Perry Methodist
Missionaries To Brazil
To Speak Here Sunday
The Rev, and Mrs. W.
Richard Schisler, Jr., United
Methodist missionaries to
Brazil, will be speaking at
Perry United Methodist
Church this Sunday morning,
November 3. Dr. Schisler will
speak at both morning ser
vices, and he and Mrs.
Schisler will share in a more
informal setting at an Adult
Sunday School Assembly.
In making this an
nouncement, the Rev. Elick
Bullington, Jr., Pastor, said,
“Dr. Schisler and I were
friends in Seminary, and after
graduation. He has spent 20
years of very effective service
in Brazil. It will be a happy
privilege for me to have Dick
and his family in this
missionary-minded church,
and for him to meet our
congregation.”
The Schislers are now on a
furlough until February, 1975,
and he is in graduate studies
at Emory University. He

one more chance and 1 am
glad I did. Now I wonder how
many limes we miss an
author’s best works because
we were turned off on him by
one of the poorer ones he has
written. I begin to realize that
even good authors do turn out
an occasional lemon.
Return Journey is a good
story. It has warmth,
suspense and a great deal of
humanity. It holds your in
terest all the way through. Pip
has returned to the city of his
youth and finds everything
has changed except his
memories. Especially
memories of Esta. Gentle
Esta, compassionate, long
suffering and belonging to
someone else.
Pip had no family and had
been “brought up" by a
crotchety old photographer
who stayed drunk most of the
time. He taught Pip all he
knew about taking pictures
and before long Pip was
running the business and
taking care of the old man.
Neither was very involved
I with the town and its people
until that fateful year of the
old man’s death.
Manhood comes slowly for
some but for others, like Pip.
it hits all at once and has a
feeling similar to that of being
kicked by an elephant. Being
twenty years old should have
been occasion for happiness
but instead he fell deeply in
love with a married woman,
became engaged to Esta, and
watched the only parent he
had ever known die. Before it
was over he had seen one man
ruin his entire life over lust
and had seen another man
become a great human being
over the same woman.
Finally, Pip became an adult
in his own right and chose to
leave the town and make his
way elsewhere.
Delderfield has given his
characters personalities
which are alive and vibrant
and well developed. He turns
stuttering little boys into men
of great stature and playboys
into frightened cowards with
only a stroke of his pen. He is a
master at developing
characters in depth while
never leaving the main theme
of the story. I have changed
my opinion of Delderfield and
I thank Margaret for causing
me to read more of his works
and I apologize to all his fans
who disagreed with my first
review.
Vanderbilt University and,

whom are in college in In
