we have to plant our little
vegetable garden in the same
place year after year after

A fellow asked me the other
day what he could do to keep
his one-site garden “healthy”.
He's .had a good garden for
several years and wants it to
continue that way.
There are a few things that
help keep a small garden
spot productive For example:
- Coplrol weeds in and
arftipxj the garden during
each -growing season.
>J?se disease resistant plant
varieties when possible
-Take soil samples for both
fertility and nematodes, and
follow up on the results
l)se healthy transplants
and maintain a good disease

possible, and avoid planting
vegetables of the same family

demand and farm prices will
encourage it.
However, supplies will be

my desk the other day.
Harvested acreage this year
could be 12 to 16 million acres
higher than 1974.
W'hat about meat produc
tion? Low feed availability,
high feed prices, and high
cattle inventory are the key
factors This year began with
the largest cattle inventory on
record. It was four percent
above a year earlier. So in
creases in beef production
appear certain in 1975.
Consumer News
U S consumers can look
forward to ample food sup
plies .... and rising prices In
fact, prices the first half of the
year are expected to increase
at rates close to the last year’s
average -- 15 percent. These
price increases will reflect
increases in raw commodity
costs as well as advances in
processing, distributing, and
marketing.
a survey. We asked several
girls in the office and around
town what we should do this
column about “What do you
need? What do you want to
I read this week?” we asked.
• They were almost
unanimous in their responses
"Tell us how to make ends
meet.”
These are working girls,
with working husbands, with
kids in school. They are
neither rich nor poor. Just
typical middle Americans
But putting food on the
table, clothes on the body, and
warmth in the home is a real
hassle. They are caught up in
inflation. Or recession. Or
whatever you call it.
One girl said, "My income is
in a recession and my outgo is
inflated."
That pretty well sums up
how a lot of people feel
But We Give Thanks
What to do?
One thing those of us with
jobs can do is be thankful for
jobs. Too many of us, I’m
afraid, have looked on work as
a chore and a bore. Maybe
even taken our jobs for
granted. But not any more.
Let’s be thankful that we
have a job, and do it to the best
of our ability. Producing more
of the things other people want
I is about the only way, really,
to get more of the things we
want. And this works not only
in production and service jobs,
but also in those intangible
things like love, consideration,
understanding, forgive
ness
In The Garden
But I’m supposed to be
telling you how to make ends
meet. How to stretch the food
dollar seems to be the biggest
problem. We can’t go into very
much depth now (we’ll do
other columns on this later),
but here is a start
First, have you considered
planting a small vegetable
garden’’ Many people say it
pays. In fact, the experts say
you can save $250 on your food
bill this year in a space only 15
x 25 feet. Os course, you need
to do it right So come by our
office and pick up the in
formation we have on gar
dening
But the garden isn’t even
planted yet And the cupboard
is bare now Well, even if you
are short on time, you can
make your food dollar last
longer by planning ahead
Plan for at least one week at a
time, and make use of all the
up-to-date food buying in
formation that's available
