"Homegrown" Pineapple
) Mrs. Shirley Mann of 1101 Pineneedle Drive in Perry is shown with her
i'homegrown” pineapple. She bought a pineapple from a grocery store in
Perry five years ago, and after eating the fruit, planted the top in the
flowerpot. The patio potted pineapple has grown for five years and now a new
pineapple is evidenced in the top of the plant. Mrs. Mann says she’ll keep it
growing for awhile.

HOME 6 FOOD K~ M
Ueef Is Plentiful - One way
to wage your own war on high
food prices is to buy food items
when they are in plentiful
supply. Prices are usually
lower then.
Our country’s beef
producers provided us with
abundant supplies of great
tasting beef in February, and
they are doing it again this
month
So beef should be an
economical buy at the
supermarket right now It
may be a very good time to put
your freezer to maximum use
Just select the cuts that fit
your family’s taste as well as
your budget Then freeze.
How To Store - Os course, if
you are going to use the meat
right away, say within two
days, freezing isn't necessary.
You can store it in the
refrigerator in the original
wrapping for that period of
time.
You can also leave beef in
the original wrapping for
freezing, too, provided it
doesn't stay in the freezer
longer than one to two weeks
For longer freezer storage,
the original package should be
over-wrapped with special
freezer material
Properly wrapped and
frozen beef cuts will maintain
their quality eight to twelve
months. Beef stored longer
than a year may lose some of

Pecan Growers Need To
Keep Good Records - It is
highly important that pecan
growers keep good records
and date them by years and
store them for future
reference.
Annual record dates are
important on the following
applications.
When fertilizer and lime
were applied When the trees
were pruned The blooming
and pollination dates. Last
spring frost dates. Rain dates
and how much. Spray dates
and how much of each
pesticide Weed control dates
and the material and amount
used. Nut maturity date.
Harvesting dates, both
beginning and ending
You can see that a lot of
action is involved in producing
a lot of good quality pecans.
Watch For Scab - With an
early Spring in the making,
its quality.
How To Wrap - The meat
should be wrapped in such
vapor-proof materials as
aluminum foil or heavily
waxed freezer paper. Wrap
the cuts closely. Eliminate as
much air as possible. When air
penetrates the paper,
moisture is drawn from the
meat Freezer burn can
result.
Make sure all packages are
sealed and dated, and follow
the rule of “first in, first out".
The freezer qlso offers
opportunities to save another
way. That’s by freezing left
over cooked beef and gravy, a
Stews and casseroles as well
as cooked roasts can be
frozen. For best quality, used
cooked beef dishes within two
to four months.
Availability Os Canning
Jars - Hopefully, relief is on
the way for the canning season
ahead At least 10 companies
will be producing canning jars
this season Kerr, Oklahoma;
Ball, Inc.; Anchor Hocking,
Ohio; and Owens, Ohio. Ohio
will be the major producers
Others include Laurens Glass
Company, South Carolina,
Midland Glass, Indiana:
North Western, Washington;
Glass Container Company,
California, and Metro Glass
No price increases on jars
are anticipated by the major
manufacturers A five percent
price increase can be ex
pected on some metal canning
lids.
Home Canned Foods Safe If
- Is the food you can safe for
your family to eat? Only if
proper canning procedures
are followed.
A boiling water bath (212
degrees F.) is used for
processing high acid foods
such as fruits, tomatoes,
pickled products, and jellied
products other than jelly.
Jars, though, should be
covered with 1-2 inches of
water during the processing
time.
A steam-pressure canner at
a temperature of 240 degrees
F. (10 lb. pressure) is needed
for processing low-acid foods
such as vegetables, meat, fish
and poultry to ensure that all
spoilage organisms are
destroyed

growers should make an effort
to control scab. Scab, a fungus
which attacks pecans, has to
be controlled early in the
spring if season long results
are to be obtained.

Fertilize Pecans Now - If
you have not already applied
your fertilizer for pecans, now
is the time to get it out. It is
very important to get the
nitrogen out early so that it
will be available for the first
flush of growth. This first
growth is when the pecan
makes most of its growth. So
remember to apply your
fertilizer early.
Check Those Sprayers -
Make sure that your sprayers
are in good repair so that
when you start spraying, there
will be no lost time from
breakdown. Give the machine

Garden Tips For March •
While there is still some risk in
getting frost damage on
tender vegetables in the lower
half of Georgia, home gar
deners can put in small
plantings of cucumbers,
squash, butterbeans (pole and
bush), and sweet corn. Keep
first plantings small just in
case Jack Frost drops by. In
the northern half of the state,
home gardeners should limit
plantings to frost hardy
vegetables such as cabbage,
broccoli, cauliflower, turnips,
mustard and collards.
Irish Potato Eyes - Some
seed companies offer precut
Irish potato eyes for sale
These are usually small seed
pieces that do not contain
sufficient reserve food to
produce a healthy, strong
plant. For best results, Irish
potato seed pieces should
weigh from IVfc to 2 ounces
each after cutting.
