Nunn Attacks Butz
Over Surplus Peanuts
U S Senator Sam Nunn
charged that Agriculture
Secretary Karl But/, is causing
'“substantial economic losses"
In the United States by
refusing to dispose of ;t9<),00()
tons of surplus peanuts now in
government storage
>' Nunn called upon But/ to
lake prompt action to channel
(he government-held peanuts

Country and to hungry nations
abroad before they are lost
through spoilage at an
I’normous cost to the U.S.
taxpayers
The Georgia Senator said
the Secretary should take a
‘‘constructive and
cooperative" attitude with (he
peanut industry at a meeting
of the National Peanut Ad
visory Committee scheduled
at USDA Thursday, March 20.
"I am deeply concerned
over recent information which
has come to my attention
regarding the peanut program

At the start of the awards
presentation. Lt. Col. Leo
Polnaszek, the Perry High
School AEI, made the an
nouncement that Cadets
Major Bob Brown and Dale
Willard had been notified that
they were selected as official
candidates to the United
States Air Force Academy at
Colorado Springs, Colorado
Also that Cadet Lt. Col. Joseph
Nadeau was selected as an
official candidate to the
United States Naval Academy
at Annapolis, Maryland He
also announced the winners of
the winter quarter out
standing Cadets as: AE 111 -
Cadet Major David Coley; AE
II - Cadet Capt Randy Rush,
and AE I - Cadet Sergeant
Irene Brown. Their names
have been permanently in
scribed on the plaques
hanging on display in the
school
These additional awards
were presented to the ap
propriate Cadets by Mr.
Malcolm Marchman, the
ment of Agriculture," Nunn
said in a letter to Butz.
Nunn attached a USDA
policy which prohibits
movement of surplus peanuts
for export and crushing at
prevailing world prices. He
said the Butz policy is causing
a loss of jobs in the peanut
area, citing the recent closing
of a peanut oil crushing plant
in Camilla, Georgia, as a
direct result of the USDA
action
"I have been informed that
the Department is currently
holding nearly 400.000 tons of
peanuts in warehouses rather
than placing them on the
market," Nunn's letter stated
"This action will lead to a
drastic downturn on the
peanut market and could
cause substantial economic
losses."
"The nation's economic
situation is perilous enough
without further job losses
caused by the closing of
various peanut oil plants due
to any inadequate supply of
peanuts," Nunn said
Perry High School Prinicpal.
