All-State Gridder Plans
For Veterinary Career
By Joe Hiett
He stands 6-2 and weighs 220
pounds and immediately
comes, to mind the sight of
Mayo Sexton on a football
field, and the 18 year old
Westfield High senior plays
the game well enough to make
SEAIS All-State. Mayo fits in
on the hardwood too, starring
on the WHS Hornets state title
team and playing in the All-
Star game.
But Dockery Mayo Sexton is
more than an athlete, he is an
above average student, and
has ambitions of being a
veterinarian. This fall he
participated in Westfield’s
Vocational Interest program
(begun by Headmaster Aaron
Turner), which slotted
students for two weeks work in
areas of their career choice.
Mayo worked with Dr.
Jerome Bloodworth, a Perry
animal physician, and went on
calls with Dr. Bloodworth to

minister to various ailing
animals, mostly horses and
cattle He watched and
assisted Dr. Bloodworth in
surgery. Quite naturally,
Mayo’s favorite class at the
moment is Physiology, taught
by Mrs. Jackie Marshall.
The Physiology class is
studying felines at the present
time, and Mayo last week
began a study of the super
ficial structure of a cat,
looking at skeletal and
muscular networks,
Mayo says he will attend the
University of Georgia to study
the veterinary sciences, and
has turned down a football
scholarship offer from
Presbyterian College of
Clinton, S.C. But the standout
defensive end may try to
make the Dooley Dogs as a
“walk-on".
Mayo is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. W.J. Sexton and has
three brothers. They include:
Davis, 28, who graduated from
West Georgia several weeks
ago; Jim, 20, at Georgia
Southern; and Colton, 14, a
student at Westfield. The
Sextons reside at 1411 Park
Avenue. They all attend Perry
United Methodist Church.
This week’s Teen of the
Week toured Europe in 1972 as
a part of a group from
Westfield under the direction
of Mrs. Dottie Bledsoe that
embarked on a Study of
Western Man. The tour lasted
six weeks and the group saw
Munich, Venice, Innsbruck
(Austria), London, Paris, and
Rome.
Mayo is a member of the
WHS Coed-Y and serves as the
organization's Vice President.
Last year he was Coed-Y
Secretary. In addition he has
been a member of the West
field Key Club for the past
three years.
HOUSTON HOME JOURNAL THURS., APR. 3. 1975.
Dockery Mayo Sexton has
had several summer jobs, one
summer in the peach picking
and packing industry, and
more recently as a manual
laborer with a local con
struction and engineering
company. Mayo credits the
hard work with developing his
physique and his appetite that
resulted in his transformance
from a 155 pound sophomore
to a 210 pound senior.
Mayo played both varsity
football and basketball for
three straight years, grades
ten through twelve. On the
gridiron, Mayo gained a
reputation as a quarterback
“cruncher” for the frequence
with which he slammed the
field generals to the turf.
Mayo started every year he
played, and each year was
among the team’s top four in
tackles.
In various games, Sexton

anchored as a defensive
tackle, defensive end, nose i
guard, or linebacker- in all of
the games playing offensive
tackle as well. Mayo was
voted Best Blocker by his
teammates and also was a
choice of coaches for the
SEAIS AA All-State team.
Mayo, although seemingly i
100 big to play basketball, J
adapted well to the hardwood I
game. He played “strong” I
forward for three years, all as /
a starter, and for three years
was voted Best Defensive
player on the Hornets. He
holds the school free throw
record with seventeen straight ,
charity losses made- during a ,
three game stretch this
season.
Mayo averaged 13.7 points
per game for Westfield, most
in clutch situations where he
secured offensive rebounds
and turned them info baskets
In addition he hauled in an ,
average of 9.8 rebounds per
contest. ,
Big Mayo served as an in- ,
timidating defensive force for
Coach Lee Martin’s SEAIS AA
state titleisls and made the AA
All-Tourney team (along with
Bill Rigdon and George •
Richerson). Mayo also was
named to play in the SEAIS
North-South All-Star contest.
A note to Bulldog mentor
Vince Dooley- don’t count out ~
Mr, Mayo Sexton, if he trys his
hand at college football. You
need good defensive linemen
and Mayo certainly qualifies. ,
