Tom Malone
, . . Lone Hornet Senior
season, smashing 24 hits in 51
trips to the plate, a sparkling
.471 average. Included was six
doubles and a triple.
George started out being
blanked by River North in
three bats, but got at least one
safety in the next twelve
games in a row. Eight times
be had two or more base
knocks in a game, four times
amassing three hits in the
seven inning affairs.
Righty hurler Tom Malone
proved he was no slouch at the
plate either, assaulting rival
moundsmen for 14 hits in 43 at
bats, a fine .326 average. Tom
showed a penchant for the
long ball too, swatting four
doubles. He was the lone
senior on the squad.
Johnny Knight was third in
hitting on the squad, with
eight hits in 28 at bats, a ,285
average. He contributed four
doubles. Knight was the
Hornet left fielder. Knight is a
sophomore.
Shortstop David Bryant, a
fast improving junior, hit .260
with 11 hits in 43 trips to the
plate. Included was a pair of
two base hits.
Catcher Phil Gentry, also a
junior, hit “just” .250, with 10
hits in 40 at bats, but had a
double and three booming
home runs in the hits, one a
bases loaded clout.
Second baseman- right
fielder Jim O’Neal, another
junior, had a .227 average with
five hits in 22 at bats. One was
a double.
Coach Percy Hardy’s
diamond crew started slowly,
but closed the season with a
rush, winding up with a 4-9
record. Faced with a very
inexperienced squad, Hardy
had molded the team into a
respected group bv season’s
end. And things are looking
better for the future.
Costly errors proved to be
Westfield’s downfall in most
games, as the pitching staff of
Tom Malone, Johnny Tucker,
David Bryant, and George
Richerson, in general, hurled
respectable ball.
Senior Malone was the
mainstay of the staff, hurling
fifty one innings, and starting
seven of the thirteen gams.
Tom had just a 2-5 record, but
deserved a better fate. His
victories were a nifty six
hitter against Fullington and a
really sparkling 7-0 shutout
against the Beechwood
Colonels. In the 51 innings,
Malone gave up only 19 earned
runs, which is a 3.30 earned
run average, considered very
good for high school baseball.
Sophomore Johnny Tucker
was the “find” of the year for
Coach Hardy. Inserted
against the Flint River
Wildcats at Woodbury, Tucker
responded with a route job,
pitching seven innings, giving
up five runs, only one earned
and whiffing seven batters. A
few days later the slightly
built • righty beat the Cats
again, at Westfield, by an 8-1
score. This time he surren
dered one earned run. struck
out five, and allowed just four
hits.
So Tucker’s Earned Run
Average (E.R.A.) figured out
to a beautiful 0.96! Without a
doubt, Tucker will see more
mound duty next spring. He
offers a teasing assortment of
junk, including knucklers,
curves, and screwballs for
rival batters to try to hit.
