crops--no livestock. Today
there’s balance-a good
balance - between crops,
livestock and poultry
Here is some general in
formation
-Land used in farming: 17
million acres-46 percent of
total land area
-Number of farms by
census definition: 75,000.
-Total farm income, 1973:
$2,176,100,000 Livestock and
poultry income: $1,187,072,000
(58 8 percent). Crop income:
$797,585,000 ( 40.2 percent).
-Average growing season
(above freezing ranges from
6>*i months in north to 9‘/i
months in south
-Average rainfall ranges
from a maximum of more
than 70 inches in extreme
northeast corner to a
minimum of 45 inches in east
central area
Thrips And Spider Mites -
Common Hose Pests - Several
species of thrips attack roses.
They feed on the lender flower
parts, causing the petals to
become flecked and
discolored and the flowers
deformed The adult flower
thrips are liny, slender,
brownish-yellow insects with
featherlike wings They are
extremely active, especially
during the months of May and
June. If you examine an in
fested blossom, you’ll see the
tiny thrips scurrying for
shelter at the base of the
petals. Several generations
occur during the summer. In
extremely hot, dry weather
they complete a life cycle in
less than two weeks To
reduce the population, cut off
and dispose of all blooms that
have passed their prime. Do
not throw spent flowers on the
ground; thrips will quickly
leave such blooms and go to
unopened buds on other
plants
Spider mites are minute
pests (hat suck plant juices.
Miles often do considerable
damage before they are
noticed. They live on the
undersides of leaves where
they are somewhat protected
from the elements and often
are not reached by chemical
sprays. Heavy infestations
result in a "dusty” ap
pearance to the foliage.
Rubbing the underside of the
leaves against a white sheet of
paper is a practical means of
checking for mites. If mites
are present red streaks will be
noted on the paper
The insecticide dimethoate
(Cygon or Defend) is effective
in reducing the populations of
both mites and thrips on roses
if applied at weekly intervals.
Centipede Mowing Height -
Applying 100 much fertilizer to
a centipede lawn is one way of
greatly increasing the
possibility of future cold in-
jury Recent research by Dr.
Robert Burns of the Georgia
Station indicates that mowing
height also has a definite
effect on winter injury of
centipede grass In research
plots near both Griffin and
Savannah. Georgia, Dr. Burns
found that the centipede grass
that was mowed at a two inch
height during the previous
season suffered considerably
more cold injury than the
grass in the plots mowed at
the one inch height. Similar
studies at Mississippi State
University have given iden
tical results. Homeowners
with centipede lawns are thus
advised to mow at the one inch
height if the lawn is in the full
sun or at a IVi inch height if
the grass is located in a
shaded area.

Losing Weight? - Quick
weight loss diets. Do they
work? Are they good for you?
During the past several
weeks we’ve been com
menting on the American
Dietetic Association’s position
paper on food and nutrition
information, or “misin
formation”, as ADA chooses
to call it.
First we covered natural,
organic and health foods.
Then, a couple of weeks ago,
we discussed vitamin, mineral
and dietary supplements. In
this final article, we will take
a look at ADA’s position
regarding quick weight loss
diets.
The Association points out
that the increasing prevalence
of obese and overweight in
dividuals in our society has
made weight control a top
consumer issue. It’s true that
diets promising quick weight
loss have become popular. It’s
true also that such diets are
shortlived. ADA says they are
based on unsound theories
which can be detrimental to
one’s health if followed
routinely for long periods.
Calories Count - Excessive
weight accumulates over a
period of time. For example:
3,500 calories mean about one
pound of body fat. A weight
loss of one pound per week can
be achieved by reducing
caloric intake for main
tenance by 500 calories a day
or by increasing activity. One
hour of walking, according to
the Dietetic Association, uses
350 calories,
The position paper mentions
several quick weight loss diets
by name. The Association
states flatly that it "does not
recommend low
carbohydrate, ketogenic
(excessive fat) diets.
“Such low-carbohydrate
dietary regimens have been
popular for quick weight loss
for many years", it continues.
“These diets have the
following similarities: (a) low
carbohydrate content; (b) no
restriction of protein and fat;
and (c) unrestricted calories
These diets have many dif
ferent labels ’’
ADA warns that such diets
are potentially hazardous. For
one thing, low-carbohydrate
high-fat diets may increase
cholesterol levels in the blood
if the fat is saturated or if
dietary cholesterol is high
This is frequently associated

Moss-A Problem In Lawns •
Homeowners frequently have
difficulty with moss invading
the lawn in certain areas.
Such areas may become
progressively larger and
unsightly due to a spotted
appearance.
Temporary control
measures include the ap
plication of lime or copper
containing fungicides,
however, more permanent
measures need to be com
pleted
More positive control
measures that are used to
eliminate moss and insure the
re-establishment of grass
include improving drainage,
reducing compaction and
increasing soil aeration, and
proper adjustment of soil
acidity.
with increased risk of heart
disease.
Lose It Slowly - Regarding
vegetarian diets, the
Association says it
"recognizes that the quality of
vegetable protein is less than
animal protein, but the careful
selection of foods for
vegetarian diets can insure
adequate nutrition for
adults’’. It adds that
vegetarian diets are growing
in popularity, particularly
among young people.
Whatever the diet, the
American Dietetic
Association recommends a
weight loss plan of one to two
pounds per week to avoid
potential health hazards.
Os course, it’s a good idea to
consult your doctor before
beginning any weight
reduction program.

Pine Beetle
Destruction
On The Rise
ATHENS—The southern
pine beetle is still wreaking
havoc in Georgia.
Ted Walker of the Uni
versity of Georgia Coopera
tive Extension Service in
Athens says a recent survey
shows 79 Georgia counties
are now included in the
southern pine beetle outbreak
area. Walker says this is an
increase of nine counties over
a July 1974 survey.
Infested areas include
practically all of the Pied
mont counties in Georgia, the
mountain counties of North
east Georgia, four counties in
the Savannah area, and five
counties south of Columbus,
State and federal entomol
ogists forecast a continuance
of beetle activity in all South
Atlantic states, reports the
Extension Service forester.
