Lasting Memorial: Restore
United States To
Number One World Power
“The right to continue to
live and work as free
American citizens is a gift to
us from the thousands upon
thousands of our nation’s
service men who rest in
eternal sleep in cemeteries
here at home and around the
world. Theirs is a gift for
which we can never repay
them. But we can remember
and honor them...’’ Those are
the words of Georgia Veterans
Service Director Pete Wheeler
who delivered a Memorial
Day address Sunday af
ternoon at Andersonville
National Cemetery.
t "In all the conflicts in which
our Nation has been in
volved,” said Wheeler, “the
final objective always has
been a ‘lasting peace’. But
history reminds us all too well
that peace has been an elusive
goal - more temporary than
permanent.
“The most positive step
toward perpetuating the peace
is to maintain a powerful
defense. As George
Washington said, ‘to be
prepared for war is the most
effectual means of preserving
the peace.’ Unfortunately, we
have never followed that
advice. Consequently, we
have invariably found our
selves unprepared at the
beginning of each war in
which we became involved.
“Certainly, a lasting peace
is what all of us earnestly
desire. Keeping the peace,
however, is never easy. As
recent events have clearly
demonstrated, the pattern of
war or the threat of war is still
very much with us. Such has
been the case for a long time.
In fact, records kept by the
Army show that, throughout
this world of ours, there have
been 14,533 wars during the
5560 years.”
Wheeler said that he is not
pessimistic. “On the con
trary,” he said, “I have great
confidence in the future
security of America. But it is
going to take a lot of hard
dedication and vigilence

“The most appropriate
memorial to our fallen
comrades would be the
restoration of the United
States of America to its for

powerful nation in the wo r ld.
This would not only be the best

peace, but it would uphold our
solemn vow that ‘they shall

Russell Parkway Funds
Allocated By Air Force
“I am pleased to announce
today that the United State*
Air Force lias allocated
$300,000 •to assist local
government in acquiring the
rights-of-way for the Richard
B. Russell Parkway in
Houston County.
'This Air Force assurance
is contingent on two conditions
being met; first, the local
governments must provide the
difference between the
$300,000 the Air Force has
committed and the estimated
Cu&t of the rights-of-way.
According to my un
derstanding, this estimated
cost is now projected to be
$450,000 Second, the original
deadline of June 1, which was
set by the state highway
department for securing the
rights-of-way must be ex
tended until at least August 1,
1975, to give the Air Force
time to complete the fund
transfer. Based on my
discussions with local state
officials, I am very optimistic
that both of these con-

“I would like to pay a
special tribute to the
cooperative effort that has
been made on this very im
portant project by the city
officials, the county officials,
the Chamber of Commerce
officials, plus the state
legislative delegation. All of
these people worked closely
with my office, with
Congressman Brinkley’s
office and with the federal and
state agencies to help solve
the problems associated with
the parkway.”
