Explode In Second Half
Westfield Rebounds With
35-7 Romp Over Knights
"The Return of the
Sting" -- Down 7-6 at in
termission, the Westfield
Hornets exploded in the
final half to bury the
Deerfield Knights 35-7 last
Friday night at the Hor
nets Nest. The victory
thrust the Hornets back
into the thick of the SEAIS
AA South region dogfight
with a 3-1 region record,
second to Southland's 4-0.
Someone on the sidelines
yelled "The Pack is Back"
and indeed, dressed in

Percy Hardy's Hornets
resembled Vince Lom

infantry yards in the
second half to pulverize the
Knights easily.
Senior runningback
David Bryant paced the
attack with 167 yards
overland on 12 carries, a
niS% 14 yard per carry
average, and two touch
downs. Linebacker par
excellence Edwin Ellis
recorded 15 tackles and
returned an intercepted
pass 67 yards for a score.
Other leading defenders
were: Billy Jerles- 11

half kickoff and drove 67
yards in 7 plays for the
only score of the night.
Keith Fleming passed to
Steve Stokeling for the
final 29 yards and the tally.
Stokeling also made a
great run after catching
the ball at the Devil 10,
evading two would be
tacklers. Paul O'Connel's
run for the point after was
stopped short.
Defensively for the
Panthers, Stokeling was
also a standout making 9
tackles with a fumble
recovery. Tim Dixon had 7
stops, followed by Paul
O'Connell 6, Joe Vickers
and Raynard Mickels 5
recovered a teammate's
bobble at the 25.
On third and 15 at the 28,
McNeill dropped back to
pass and spotted 185
pounder Bo Johnson racing
down the left sideline.
McNeill lofted a pass in
Johnson's direction, and
the Knight split receiver
took the ball from two
Westfield defensive backs,
falling into the end zone for
a score with 6:07 left on the
first quarter clock. The
PAT kick was true and
Deerfield led 7-0.
The Hornets took the
kick-off and moved upfield
fairly well, but a second
fumble gave Deerfield the
pigskin on their own 48
with 3:46 left in the first
period. But a fourth and
Inches play at the Hornet
41 saw Westfield's line
throw QB McNeill back
short of the first down.
Again Westfield's of
fense moved well, driving
behind good outside
running by David Bryant
and George Richerson all
the way to the enemy 17
before surrendering the
ball on downs with 8:35 left
before halftime. The two
teams then swapped
possessions, with Deerfield
recovering their own
fumble at the Deerfield 23.
Finally with 1:35 left
before the half, Westfield
took over on their own 44.
After a nine yard gain by
Jon Pierce, Bryant took a
each. Marvin Nobels had a
fumble recovery with 5
tackles. Greg Harvey 4,
Keith Fleming, Lee Jones,
and Daron Thomas 3, Joe
Dixon, Rodney Bridges,
David Seay, and Jerome
Johnson 2 each; as
Reginald Canady in
tercepted a Devil aerial
with 1 stop.
Marvin Nobels led the
offensive attack grinding
out 64 yards, followed by
' Tim Dixon's 48. As a team
the "B" Panthers had 145
total yards while holding
the "B" Devils to 86 total.
The Bonaire team was led
by their talented quar
terback, Jeff Greene with
48 yards.
The Perry "B" Panthers
played a game Wednesday
night at PHS against the
Perry "B" Saints. Their
next game is October 15 at
PHS against the Demons.
Kickoff time is 8:00.

all the way to the Knight 26
on a beautiful, determined
run.
Three passes then tell

fourth down, still at the 26
Richerson dropped back to

streamed through, and a
pass was dumped over the
oncharging line to fullback
Phil Gentry. The stubby
190 pounder wheeled down
the middle to score, as the
clock read 0:24 left. The
PAT was wide left, so
Deerfield led at halftime 7-
6.
THE PACK IS BACK
Deerfield came out in a
two men wide set to start
the third quarter, and piled
up two straight chain
movers, to Westfield's 28
before the Hornets snuffed
out the threat. Tailback
David Bryant promptly
swept end twice on option
plays from the Veer, for
N , f
Percy Hardy
ten, then for nine yards to
the Knight 47.
Behind a good block by
Gentry, Bryant carried
again on a sweep, down to
the Deerfield 27. Then field
general George Richerson
came right on an option,
kept the ball, cut back to
the middle of the field,
sidestepped a tackier and
fled all the way to paydirt,
with 7:38 on the 3rd
quarter clock. Bryant got
the two-point PAT on a
run, and the Hornets were
ahead 14-7.
Again utilizing the two
men split wide together,
Deerfield tried to get their
attack underway. They
made two first downs, but
a savage hit loosened the
pigskin at Westfield's 48,
and standout linebacker
Jay Ragland recovered for
the Hornets with 5:35 left
in the quarter.
On the first play from
scrimmage, Bryant

pitched off to Bryant, and
David took advantage of
great blocking to waltz
down the left sideline 50

21-7, as the Knights tried to

MR. ELLIS HITS
GOLD!!
The Knights ran out the
quarter, ringing up two
chalnmovers despite good
defensive end play by Billy
Jerles and Johnny Knight,
the boy from south of Flat
Creek. As the fourth period
got underway the Albany
bunch got two more first
downs and looked to be in
operation. But then QB Pat
McNeill attempted a flat
pass to his HB, and in
stepped cat quick Edwin
Ellis from his linebacking
post.
Ellis intercepted the
pass, took off for the end
zone and outdistanced all
pursuers, completing a 67
yard interception return,
as the Westfield crowd
whopped it up, with 9:59
left in the game. A two
point PAT run by
Richerson was good and
Westfield now led 29-7.
Obviously stunned, the
Knights were forced to
punt, David Bryant

the clock showing 6:3fl left.
The PAT was blocked, but
Westfield led 35 7.
Phil Gentry recovered

contest went the Hornet

they punched the ball
