Officials Decline Comment
Grants Store Here May
Close At The End Os Year

A rumor developed this
week in Perry and several
other Georgia com
munities, that the Grant
City Stores in Georgia will
close this December. The
W.T. Grant Co. announced
In New York last week that
201 stores west of the
Mississippi will close later
this year In the face of
bankruptcy. The Grant

Scarborough Resigns Post
City Councilman Gordon
Scarborough, Jr., told The
Home Journal this week he
will resign his post three
position on council at the
next regular meeting of
council on October 21.
Scarborough gave
business and personal
reasons for making the
decision to resign his post
with two years remaining
on a four year term.

Al Baggarly, a 32 year
old vice president of
Security Federal Savings
and Loan Association,
announced this week he
will qualify and run for
post three on city council In
a special election to be held
to fill the unexplred term
of incumbent Gordon
Scarborough, Jr., who said
this week he plans to
resign his post for business
and personal reasons.
Baggarly has been
associated with Security
Federal for the past five
years and prior to that he
worked with the C and S
Bank in Macon and the
First National Bank of
Aflanta.
He Is a native of Macon
and graduated from
Baggarly

Manager Don Simmons
was contacted by The
Home Journal late
Tuesday, but said he had
no comment at this time
concerning the possible
closing of the store.
However, The Home
Journal learned from
ditlonal responsibilities
and an increased work
load in my business, I
hereby resign from city
council effective as soon as
another individual can be
elected and move in to take
my place."
"I am now working with
two new salesmen and
have been assigned to
some additional territory.
At the same time, my
responsibilities on council
have steadily increased
since the first of the year
and I do not feel I can
adequately serve on 9

and Macon Junior College.
He is a graduate of the
School for Executive
Development for Savings
and Loan at the University
of Connectlcutt. He has
attended a number of
seminars and taken a
course on savings and
loans and has served as an
instructor at several
seminars.
Along with his duties as
Security Federal vice
president, Baggarly is the
branch administrator of
Security's seven Middle
Georgia offices in Perry,
Fort Valley, Warner
Robins, Columbus, Dublin,
Hawkinsville and Mon
tezuma,
Baggarly is a member
and former president of
the Perry Exchange Club;
member and secretary and
treasurer of the Middle
Georgia Chapter 197 in
stitute of financial
education; a member of
the National Association of
Eagle Scouts; a member of
the Perry United
Methodist Church; former
board member of the
Perry Cancer Society and
the UGF; a member of the
Perry Area Chamber of
Commerce and past
chairman of the chamber's
tourism committee.
Baggarly stated, ”1 have
long wanted to serve the

Extensive Renovations Planned On Buildings
Tolleson Sets Downtown Projects
Mell Tolleson of Tolleson
Lumber Co., Inc. of Perry
announced this week that
he has purchased two
properties in downtown
Perry and that one ex
tensive renovation project
is complete and another
project is set to begin in the
next few days.

Grant Plaza Shopping
Center. No one really
seems to be able to
determine the effect the
possible Grants closing
will have on other stores in
the shopping center.
Grant has 33 stores in
Georgia including the
Perry store and a store in
Warner Robins. The Grant
Plaza Shopping Center is
owned by Capricorn
Records and the Allman
Brothers Band of Macon.
Although there is no
official word on the
possible closing of Grants,
The Home Journal has also
learned that Grants will
run an extensive pre-

chandise in the store.

Chooses
Post 6
Mrs. Susan Thomas, the
46 year old housewife and
Avon saleswoman, who
announced for city council
last week, said this week
she will run for Post 6.
Mrs. Thomas did not
specify which post she
would seek in her initial
announcement, deciding to
take a wait and see at
titude.
Post 6 is held by in
cumbent Alton Hardy, who
said last week he will not
seek re-election. Perry
attorney Herbert Wells
earlier announced he
would seek the Post 6 slot.

Homes Set For Dec. 14
If you are looking for a
special way to spend a
Bicentennial afternoon,
here Is the answer. In
keeping with the Bicen
tennial Christmas theme of
Perry, "An Olde
Fashioned Christmas At
The Crossroads", the
Sogadera Club has
revealed plans for its sixth
annual community
project. This major event
entitled, "A Fireside
Holiday", will be a tour of
prestigious Perry homes.
Mrs. Tom Leonard and
Mrs. Draper Watson,
general chairmen of the
holiday parade of homes,
announce that the show
will take place on Sunday,
December 14, from 1 P M.
until 5 P.M. Headquarters
for the event will be
Ochlahatchee Clubhouse
where tickets may be
purchased the day of the
tour and maps may be
obtained. Refreshments
will be served at the
clubhouse. Anyone wishing
Authority's long range
plans to revitalize the
central business district.
Tolleson made his an
nouncement In conjunction
with officers and members
of the Perry Redevelop
ment Authority. On hand
for the announcement this
week was Lewis Meeks,
Sogadera Club chairwomen, Jeanne Leonard
(left) and Dawn Watson are shown here finalizing

here as part of the "olde Fashioned Christmas at

will feature a most im

is emphasized In the ar
chitectural interest and
heritage in the homes. The
warmth and serenity of the
past, authentic designs,
antiques, timeless
collections and a
gratifying sense of dlt
ferent life-styles will be
displayed throughout the
parade. Restoration and a
keen sense of decorating
are also highlights along
with the genuine spirit of
Christmas and the
Yuletide.
The homes being
chairman of the Authority;
Don Parkinson, vice
chairman, Billy Bledsoe,
treasurer; W.G. Mullins,
contractor for the Tolleson
projects and former
chairman of the Authority.
Tolleson stated, "I feel
the downtown area has a
tremendous future. There

Mr. and Mrs. Ed
Beckham, Gilmer Street;
Dr. and Mrs. Jerome
Bloodworth, Woodsdale
Road; Mr. and Mrs. Lewis
Meeks, Swift Street; Mr.
and Mrs. Ronnie Stanley,
Main Street; and Mr. and
Mrs. Larry Walker,
Northside Road. The show
features one and two story
homes, early colonial,
Dutch colonial, and
heritage homes. Assisting
the host and hostess at
each home on the day of
the parade as tour guides,
will be members of the
club.
The warmth and spirit of
Christmas in Perry and the
Bicentennial observance
are only two reasons for
attending this upcoming
community event.
Proceeds from the show
will be used by the club in
their efforts to aid in many
chairltable projects in
