Undefeated Peach
Next For Panthers
This is a big week for the
Perry Panthers. Peach
County is coming to town
and that always makes for
an interesting evening.
This year they have the
two leading rushers and
scores in Region 3-AA, and
possibly the state. They
are undefeated, and are
ranked number 5 in AA.
This will be the 4th team
the Panthers have faced
out of 6 that are ranked in
the top 10. Again we
welcome the opportunity to
compete against such high
calibre opposition. We feel
like it is a privilege to be
able to play tough folks and
we appreciate the op
portunity to represent the
Perry community in this
way. We know that the
Perry people and
surrounding area enjoy
seeing the top teams in the
state play.
The next two weeks are
an excellent opportunity to
see two of the finest high
school football teams in the
state play Peach County
and Americus. Come on
out and support the
Panthers.
As promised here are the
juniors:
John Arnali- Defensive
halfback. A very deter
mined young man. John
works hard and is one of
the best hustlers we have.
He gives us strength in the
Warriors held on the PAT
attempt and carried an 8-6
lead into half-time.
Early in the third period
the Panthers scored and
took command of the ball
game. A pass from QB
Lynn Smith to Ridley
covered the distance of 55
yards and the TD.
Clarence Bogan powered
his way across for the
PAT. The score was then
14 8 in favor of the Pan
thers.
Later in the third period
Perry Jr. High struck
again. This time Smith hit
fullback Sam Kendrick
wish a 10 yard scoring
sfrike. This play
culminated a 55 yard
drive. The PAT was no
good. Earlier Kendrick
had raced 60 yards for a
TD bus it was called back
because of a penalty.
Ridley picked up a
Warrior fumble in the
fourth period and ran it
down to the one yard line
and fumbled it into the end
zone. Robertson pounced
on the ball tor the final
Panther touchdown of the
game.
Ridley led all rushers
with 197 yards and two
touchdowns. "John is a
fine runner with good
moves and speed " Coach
Mims said, "but we're far
from a one man ball club.
Kendrick has breakaway
speed and does a
tremendous job blocking
tor John. Bogan has good
power as a runner.
We also have some fine
linemen. Tackles Darrell
Parker and Marcus Riley
are two of the best in the
county. Jimmy Linder at
tight end does a fine job
blocking and is a good pass
receiver. In the middle of
the line we have Andy
Poole at center and he has
come on real strong for us.
The guards are
adequately handled by 5 of
our people Keith Owens,
Bobby Woodard, Boyd
Brooks, Don Grace and
Curtis Worthy. Worthy
hasn t seen too much
action the last 3 games
because of an Injured foot
defensive backfield and
has a good attitude.
Leon Greene Defensive
linebacker- one of the
pleasant surprises we have
had on defense. Leon has
become one of our hardest

hitters. He's the 3rd
leading tackier and moves
on the ball real quick.
Gives us the strength we
need at linebacker.
Kent Fleming- Offensive
Tackle- The most con
sistent blocker on the of
fensive line. Gets off the
ball quick and attacks his
man. Kent plays some on
defense when we need him.
One of the hardest working
kids we have.
Anthony Grace- Of
fensive (iuard has done a
tremendous job for us. He
has been a pleasant sur
prise in the offensive line.
One of our smallest
linemen, he gets off the
ball quick and has good leg
drive which is necessary to
be a good blocker.
but he's a good one. Curtis
Noble handles the other
end spot."
The Panthers are not all
offense either. They have
put together a defense
which is allowing op
ponents only 4 points a
game. Thursday the
defense was led in tackles
by Bogan with 10, Smith
with 9, and Parker with 8.
Woodard, Sam Robertson
and Randy Brown chipped
in with 7 each. "We're just
a good solid football
team," Coach Gibson said.
"Good on defense as well
as offense." Linder,
Robertson and Ridley had
fumble recoveries for the
Panthers.

The Perry "B" Panthers
showed an awesome of
fensive display against the

Oct. 8 at Perry High
football field.
After failing to score on
their first possession the
"Cats" tallied their five
remaining possessions and

interception return by
Raynard Mickels. Three
PAT'S were converted, two
by AAickels and the other

Westfield's Joey Mann

Overcomes Injuries
Hornets' Mann On
SCC Cage Roster
Former Westfield High
basketball star Joey Mann
has made the South
Georgia College Tigers
varsity cage team. Joey is
one of 15 players out of 35
who went out to make the
squad for Coach Scotty
Perkins
The Tigers play in the
Georgia Junior College
conference and begin their
season Tuesday and
Wednesday, November 11
and 12, by participating In
a Tip-Off Tournament at
Middle Georgia College in
Cochran. Copies of the
complete South Georgia
schedule are available at
the HHJ office while the
supply lasts.
Incidentally, two other
former SEAIS cagers are
on the team- Bartow
another reason we are able
to run off tackle.
James Parker Offensive
Tackle and Guard- has
started at both positions.
He is the type player you
need in the offensive line.
He gives us strength at two
key positions. His regular
position is guard, but
because of his good at
titude and determination
we have used him at tackle
when we need to.
Stan Wallev- Offensive
Guard and Fullback- has
been a consistent per
former at guard the past
two years. We have
recently moved him to
fullback and this should
strengthen us. He runs
hard and low to the ground
which makes him hard to
bring down. Stan does a
good job of blocking too.
William Lester- Of
fensive Tailback- He is our
second leading rusher and
is sth in Region 3-AA in
scoring with 28 points.
Very hard and determined
runner. He is probably the
smallest running back in
the region, yet is one of the
and 8 respectively for
scores and Thomas
received the other aerial
on a beautifully executed
pass and run play for a 33
yard gain.
Panther Marvin Nobels
led all rushers with 43
yards and two TD's; Steve
Stokeling gained 18 yards
and tallied one PAT.
Raynard Mickels picked
up 9 yards and 2 extra
points; Daron Thomas ran
for 9 yards on an end
around, with Kirk Borden
getting 8 on the same style
play. Paul O'Connell also
had a fine outing and
displayed some fine
blocking on the sweeps.
Larry Whitfield led the
Saints on the ground with
10 yards followed by
graduate Willis Jones and
Mickey Minnick, an
alumnus of Savannah
Christian.
Joey says he had to sit
out last year because of a
painful foot affliction
which caused his foot
muscles to knot. But Mann
is a courageous young
person, and the 6'2", 170
pounder is still battling the
affliction, doing well
enough to make the team.
He does add, “It is going
to be a constant struggle
for me this year, with my
foot problems and my bad
knees. I'm doing exercises,
but my quickness, which Is
my biggest liability
anyway, is not what It
could be."
Joey is playing both
forward and guard and
scoring leaders.
Of.
tensive split end- has
thrown some very im
portant downfield blocks
for us this year to provide
with long gains on extra
yards. Works hard and has
a great attitude.
Freddie King- Offeruive
Fullback and Detersive
End- Has gained over 100
yards rushing and
provides us with a middle
threat on offense. Is very
strong and gives us extra
strength at defensive end.
Edwin Allen- Offensive
Powerback, Pullback and
Tightend- plays all three of
these positions and gives
us an opportunity to rest
some of the people at those
positions.
Willie Rae Kendrick-
Defensive Nose Guard-
Very quick and
aggressive. He is our
second leading tackier and
the sth leading tackier in
the region. Willie of
tentimes forces the op
posing teams to double
team him because he is so
quick.
Kenneth Hammock with 7
yards rushing and one pass
reception for 9 yards. Wren
Rainey, Hervia Ingram,
and Rob Mullis also shared
pigskin carrying duties.
Defensively for the
Saints Billy Spires led the
way with 6 tackles,
followed by Dwayne Day
5; Kenneth Hammock and
Michael Griggs 4; Greg
Coleman, Kenneth Terrell,
Ed Huckaby, and Robert
Brunson 2; and lianny
Collins, Judd Hunt, Benjie
DeFore, Larry Whitfield,
and Wren Rainey 1 each.
Other Saints playing were:
Joe Barker, Hoke Morrow
and Greg Simmons.
Steve Stokeling again led
the Panther defense with
11 tackles followed closely
by Daron Thomas' 10, Tim
Dixon 6, Joe Vickers and
Marvin Nobles 5, Raynard
Mickels and Reginald
Canady 4, Eric Borden and
Jerome Johnson 3, ,Paul
O'Connell 2, and f 3reg
Harvey, Keith Fleming
and Jett Harrison 1.
Joe Dixon recovered a
Saint fumble. Jerome
Johnson, Tim Boone,
Rodney Bridges, Lee
Jones, Cedric Mickels,
David Seay, and Randy

blocking for their backs,
opening holes for 91
rushing yards and 63
passing.
